  • Specialist but well told

A seemingly specialised and specific podcast that is told in a very accessible way. Interesting and entertaining episodes by interviewers who let the subjects speak within a structure, rather than dominating the interview.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep57 - Nuremberg - Ulrika Akander, Michael Babcock, Joe Dzuban & Balázs Varga
Q: Balázs, how did you get involved with this in the first place?
Balázs explains he was contacted by a Hungarian production company, joined early to help with on-set sound, and became part of a collaboration that extended into the final mix.
Ep56 - Hedda - Judi Lee-Headman
Q: The maze sequence outside in the garden—was that another scene that required careful choreography?
Yes. We rehearsed extensively to map out what could be covered, and we planted props to simulate the search for the script while hiding mics and RF gear in safe spots, ensuring coverage without revealing equipment.
Ep56 - Hedda - Judi Lee-Headman
Q: How did you approach the costumes, especially Hedda's boned dress, with mic placement and potential fabric noise?
Costume collaboration was crucial. We placed mics in the bodice where possible, but the boned construction caused squeaks, so we relied heavily on boom mics for dialogue; the team also helped by 3D printing the necklace to avoid noise while keeping the visual key piece intact.
Ep56 - Hedda - Judi Lee-Headman
Q: So the first question I had was about the location. Obviously, it's one location. But I imagine that that one location was far more complex than it seems.
The challenges came from strict area restrictions inside the stately home, forcing us to plan multi-zone RF coverage and precise camera blocking. We had to design separate RF zones for different wings and work with the video crew to ensure coverage without moving the entire rig around the house.
Ep69 - Women In Sound “Amplify” series - part 3 - Gwen Yates Whittle
Q: Why is representation in sound departments important for film quality?
Having diverse voices leads to broader perspectives, better collaboration, and richer storytelling; it helps ensure the sound reflects a wider range of experiences and audiences.
