  • Watch your language

Dirty language and curse words in the December 18 episode — should have had an explicit language warning. As a professional podcast I expected better from the hosts and editor /producer.

  • Getting dull…

The podcast is starting to get a little dull and more partisan political focused. I now put off listening in favor of more relevant, less partisan and more timely episodes about current foreign affairs issues. Maybe time for some new (guest) hosts to mix things up a little.

  • Lost its way…

I used to really love this podcast and enjoyed hearing the “war stories” from our foreign service professionals. Unfortunately, this show has become yet another political program. This program used to rise above it all. It would be well served to return to that.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Diplomat Lounge: How To Fix Fear and Loathing in a Post Trump World
Q: What would you change about America's foreign policy in Latin America?
The guests discuss returning to a balance of soft power and principled engagement, expanding educational exchanges, and restoring trust through transparent, long-term initiatives rather than short-term transactional deals.
The Hole in Putin's Imperial Designs
Q: Did you ever have instances where visitors from Washington, Congress, Executive Branch, whatever, where you really had to brief people about what they should say, or what they shouldn't say?
Yes. Americans are full of opinions, and we had to brief them to avoid off-script remarks, stressing the importance of acknowledging Kazakhstan's relationships with its neighbors while still conveying U.S. policy.
Sampling Shawarma on the Champs-Elysees in Za'atari Refugee Camp
Q: Was it possible to contain Iran and its influence without relying on military force alone?
Yes, but only with a comprehensive approach that combines diplomacy, economic engagement, and long-term investment in local governance and civil society to give communities a stake in stability, alongside targeted military measures when necessary.
Sampling Shawarma on the Champs-Elysees in Za'atari Refugee Camp
Q: You served next door to Iran as Ambassador to Iraq. How did Iran's proxies shape the battlefield and diplomacy when ISIS surged?
Iranian-backed militias exploited the chaos, but the U.S. and Iraqi leadership coordinated to de-conflict and put Iraqi security forces in the lead, while acknowledging the militias' influence and avoiding a direct confrontation that could derail the broader campaign.
Is "Soft Power" Really So Soft?
Q: Why did Bush visit and invest so heavily in Zambia?
Bush's visits and the scale of PEPFAR funding reflected a strategic bet on health as a lever for stability and a demonstration of American commitment to Africa, which helped catalyze reforms and partnerships on the ground.
