Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#194 - Will Simpson - I need to be the genesis of my own momentum
Q: But what was your origin story, Will? How did you first find the game?
Will describes mini rugby in North Allerton, Yorkshire, where he was six and quickly fell in love as his dad exposed him to the sport. He recalls moving through the Yorkshire system, the jump from local clubs to bigger clubs like York, and how he quickly learned there are levels to success, with coaching and environment playing key roles in progression.
CLASSIC - It's the players with the best core skills - Mike Friday - #8
Q: Okay, you mentioned goals there. From when you started with the USA 7s, how do you assess progress toward those goals now?
Five years in, we moved from near relegation and odds of Olympic qualification to consistently competing at the top four, with a structured, diverse coaching group and a clear plan. We still face gaps between 7s and 15s pathways, but the trajectory shows progress when we maintain direction, development pipelines, and national pride.
#185 - Colin Dalgarno - We raised £2.6 million
Q: How has the club approached growth and inclusivity, particularly for women and girls?
They focused on growing participation by recruiting coaches, delivering welcome sessions, and launching Strathaven Ravens; they leveraged social media, school outreach, and community officers to bring more girls into rugby, with rapid growth from zero to about 45 players in weeks and a bowl final at Murrayfield to close their inaugural season.
#185 - Colin Dalgarno - We raised £2.6 million
Q: What were the key challenges and lessons in combining rugby with football club facilities?
The main challenges included opening communications, planning legal access and maintenance agreements, and overcoming initial lack of guidance from SRU/SFA; they created detailed agreements to prevent conflicts and built a collaborative governance structure to share facilities effectively.
CLASSIC - I got filled in most weeks - Tom Lindsay - #11
Q: Where did you first pick up a ball and what position were you playing?
Lindsay started at Hendon Prep as a youngster, began on the wing/back three, and later moved into the front row, aided by mentors and opportunities.
