  • Really fun hang out with tech nerds

Great audio and video quality. The Twit network has a whole stable of shows about tech that range from tight and scripted to extended conversations. My favorite might MacBreak Weekly, a wide-ranging discussion between well-informed and courteous good friends but All About Android is a completely different group of good friends all obsessed with Android phones and that one is great too. The shows are especially nice to watch live on twit.tv for some company but subscribing to the podcast is handy... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hands-On Tech 259: Using a Webcam on Windows & macOS
Q: What should I try first to fix a USB webcam that won't be recognized on macOS when switching from Windows using a USB/HDMI switcher?
Start with a powered USB hub between the switcher and the Mac to improve USB device re-enumeration; if that doesn't solve it, consider upgrading the switcher to a model known to re-enumerate properly on macOS, such as CKL or Ugreen, and finally evaluate a dedicated Mac-friendly docking station as a longer-term solution.
Tech News Weekly 430: Understanding the US Router Ban
Q: Can you walk us through what exactly happened with the FCC router ban and what it entails for consumers and manufacturers?
The FCC ban prevents importing, marketing, or selling consumer routers that are largely developed outside the United States, effectively targeting foreign-made routers while allowing existing devices to continue operating. For new products to enter the U.S., manufacturers must seek conditional approval which includes a substantial US manufacturing commitment and a detailed plan showing how they will build or expand in the U.S., but there are currently no explicit cybersecurity requirements in that approval list.
This Week in Space 203: China Rising
Q: Is there really a race going on between the US and China in space, or is this a broader strategic narrative?
Dr. Goswami outlines that while a traditional race is not a strict Cold War-style duel, there is a scramble and rising tempo in capabilities and timelines, especially with China's focus on lunar infrastructure, resource utilization, and a push to establish presence, which could evolve into a broader strategic competition rather than a single-pitch race.
Hands-On Tech 260: Ethernet vs. USB-C for File Transfers
Q: Should I spend the extra money to get a 10 gig ethernet port or find a USB-C to 10 gig ethernet dongle? Do USB-C speeds surpass 1 gig and 10 gig ethernet capabilities?
USB-C can reach speeds in the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 range that rival or exceed 1 gig, and in some configurations can approach or match 10 gig speeds, but real-world results depend on the entire chain (cables, devices, and Ethernet protocol). Native 10 gig Ethernet with a built-in port or Thunderbolt-based connections generally provide the most reliable, sustained throughput for high-demand tasks like video editing with NAS, whereas USB-C dongles can introduce bottlenecks or instability under load. For critical workflows, prioritize native speeds (Thunderbolt 3/4 or built-in 10 gig) over dongles.
Tech News Weekly 429: DarkSword Puts Hundreds of Millions at Risk
Q: Could you please walk us through what made these kinds of exploits so rare in the past, and what's changed now with DarkSword?
Hacking iPhones has traditionally been extremely difficult due to strong defenses and App Store restrictions, with attacks usually highly targeted at high-risk individuals. DarkSword represents a shift because it is a watering-hole attack using multiple vulnerabilities to silently take over a device after a user visits an infected site, a broader and more readily weaponizable technique.
