  • Really fun hang out with tech nerds

Great audio and video quality. The Twit network has a whole stable of shows about tech that range from tight and scripted to extended conversations. My favorite might MacBreak Weekly, a wide-ranging discussion between well-informed and courteous good friends but All About Android is a completely different group of good friends all obsessed with Android phones and that one is great too. The shows are especially nice to watch live on twit.tv for some company but subscribing to the podcast is handy... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tech News Weekly 440: Inside a High School's Deepfake Nightmare
Q: What happened at Radnor High School and how did adults respond to the incident?
A freshman used an app to transform girls' images into sexually explicit AI-generated videos; school and police responses were inconsistent and confusing for weeks, with initial moves to investigate followed by statements that no crime was found, later corrected to acknowledge a juvenile offender and ongoing concerns among parents.
Intelligent Machines 874: Google Knows I Love the Pepper Cannon
Q: What makes Hermes different from other agents on the market?
Hermes combines a local, fully on-device model with a rich skill and memory system, supports multiple backends, and can gracefully route tasks to different models depending on the job, which makes it robust, private, and flexible for users who want control over their AI.
Hands-On Tech 270: Troubleshooting External Storage
Q: Any specific recommendations for a listener who wants near-internal speeds without building their own kit?
Yes—consider a Thunderbolt 5 USB4 enclosure paired with a fast NVMe blade, and if you want a quick, reliable option, sealed Thunderbolt 5 drives from reputable brands can be good choices, though they come at a higher price and potential heat concerns.
Hands-On Tech 270: Troubleshooting External Storage
Q: Is Thunderbolt worth it over USB-C, and what should I look for when buying an external drive?
Thunderbolt, especially Thunderbolt 5, delivers far higher speeds (up to 80 Gbps bi-directional) and keeps data moving smoothly; prioritize a cable and enclosure that match the drive's interface, consider the cost, heat, and reliability, and perhaps opt for high-performance NVMe enclosures if speed is your goal.
Hands-On Tech 270: Troubleshooting External Storage
Q: How should I format an external drive to use across macOS, Linux, and Windows?
If you only use the drive with a Mac, format as APFS; for cross-platform use, exFAT works but lacks journaling and is more prone to corruption if removed during transfers; avoid Mac OS Extended and NTFS for new SSDs unless you rely on third-party tools.
