  • Spreading the good

People have this idea that potions are these pests and “rats of the sky” but this podcast spreads the word that pigeons are actually great animals and is a great listen for anyone that likes birds or is into animal husbandry. Even if you do t own pigeons it still a great listen.

  • They’re finding their wings

First year was a little rocky with audio quality and music, but the interviews are getting increasingly better and the content is even more dialed in. As a new pigeon enthusiast that binged year one, I’m really enjoying the direction it’s going in. Get Rosemary Moscow on here!

  • Keep it up guys!

Love that you open up so many aspects of the hobby! Racing, rollers, shows, utility, etc.

I find real value here in this relatively unique hobby.

One thing I would love to see going forward is discontinuing the intro music as soon as the you’re done with the intro. It’s so difficult to hear and distracts from the speakers- including yourselves. Especially when listening in the car or in a busy setting.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

147. Building a Championship Roller Team with Rick Mee
Q: What are the practical signs you look for in breeding to maximize synchronized breaks?
Look for birds that tend to go to the front of the group and break in unison, prefer full siblings or close relatives in the same litter, and ensure the birds' sizes and feed needs align to maintain a uniform performance under race-day conditions.
147. Building a Championship Roller Team with Rick Mee
Q: So when you talk about a kit versus a team, how do you approach turning a group into a cohesive unit?
It starts with selecting birds that show a tendency to break together and then breeding for tighter kinship so they perform as a unit, not just as individuals; timing and consistency through feeding, rest, and practice build the team dynamics.
146. Racing Pigeons Compilation Vol. 2 | 4-H, Hand Scanning, Long Distance Racing, Loft Design & Club Operations
Q: What are the biggest challenges for your club and the sport overall?
Membership size is identified as the main obstacle, affecting the ability to sustain longer, more expensive races and maintain robust schedules; growth is linked to outreach and diversification of events.
146. Racing Pigeons Compilation Vol. 2 | 4-H, Hand Scanning, Long Distance Racing, Loft Design & Club Operations
Q: How does the club organize its races and manage membership to keep things fair?
The guest describes geographic considerations, rotating north-south routes, winter and summer meetings, and inclusivity of members within a broad radius while maintaining fair race conditions.
146. Racing Pigeons Compilation Vol. 2 | 4-H, Hand Scanning, Long Distance Racing, Loft Design & Club Operations
Q: You've been racing pigeons with your dad since 1958. Can you talk about your introduction into pigeons and how you got into doing that?
The guest explains the origin with family connections, early loft development, and learning from experienced flyers in Buffalo, leading to a lifelong involvement with long-distance racing and a few key mentors.
