  • I look forward to Mondays now!!

Scot does a fantastic job of finding interesting people to interview. I always learn something about scent Work, something about dogs and most importantly lots about creating a strong working team filled with compassion and willingness to work through tough scenarios. It’s interesting to hear how judges and other competitors remember their most challenging times as well as the most successful times. Can’t wait for season 2.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Joanne Soyke | Becoming a Better Listener
Q: How do you balance training philosophy with trial performance?
I focus on read-and-respond rather than forcing a specific behavior; I value giving dogs space to solve, and if needed I guide them back without breaking their engagement.
Joanne Soyke | Becoming a Better Listener
Q: What makes a good novice to upper-level search in your view?
Keep searches straightforward at the novice level to allow the dog to demonstrate clear detection, then gradually introduce variations and complexity as skill builds, always prioritizing the dog's capability and comfort.
Judith Guthrie | The Judging Framework That Makes You a Better Competitor
Q: What is the 100 rule and how does it apply to competition and training?
It's a framework that scores environment, tools, and puzzle difficulty to ensure the search is challenging yet doable, with adjustments based on how busy or changing the environment is, so the task aligns with the team's skill level.
Melissa Sowa | Take Your Time
Q: When you step up to the start line as a competitor, what goes through your mind?
She describes a careful start-line routine: taking a breath, settling shoulders, ensuring the dog is ready, and having a search plan (Plan A) to follow the dog unless circumstances require otherwise.
Kristi Murdock | The Smellevangelist Behind WeSmellBetter.com
Q: What is your dog's favorite reward after a great search and be specific?
A Neutro Crunchy Peanut Butter Treat appears to be the favorite reward after a successful search.
