AIR is an interview podcast series with a different theme each episode. Created in 2017, AIR aims to be something different in the wide world of music journalism. Tired of the usual promotional fluff, host Emma Robertson invites artists, DJs, and musicians to get deep on one topic that inspires them — everything from nature, to film, to spirituality — in the hope that it inspires you, too.

  • Quality over quantity!

A really great podcast series, always thoughtful and interesting conversation with super interesting people. Not super regular but careful curation of any kind clearly takes time so this is not a criticism. Some favourite episodes of mine are Donato Dozzy, Robert Henke, Max Cooper and tINI but they are all great!

  • Leveling Levels

This show is good but it often feels like it cares more about having a guest who is marginalized than having a guest who is interesting.

  • Fascinating!

Really interesting conversations with some people I’ve heard of, and some people I should have heard of (be prepared to go off on a full day of diving through the interwebs after each episode).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

AIR 084 / Laura Misch
Q: How did the shift from bedroom recording to outdoor, nature-informed work come about?
The move happened during COVID when the artist was cooped up in London and longed to perform outside, leading to a broader exploration of recording in caves, on cliffs, and around waters, with a focus on listening and environmental collaboration rather than pristine studio conditions.
AIR 082 / Chris Liebing
Q: How do you balance finishing a track with not over-polishing it?
Trust comes from knowing when the arrangement works and the sound sits right, and the mastering process marks the final point where you dedicate yourself and accept the track as finished.
AIR 082 / Chris Liebing
Q: Why did you decide to take the plunge and do all these elements by yourself rather than continuing to collaborate?
Because after many collaborations, I wanted to prove to myself that I could control the process end-to-end, create on my own terms, and ensure the work aligns completely with my vision.
AIR 081 / D'Julz
Q: Was it the same with producing that you spent a lot of time honing things and perfecting it before you actually started making music that you wanted to play or releasing music that you wanted to release?
No, it took a while to do stuff completely on my own. I started with demos and later redid them with better equipment, which built my confidence.
AIR 081 / D'Julz
Q: Can you talk a bit about what that was like for you?
Moving to New York was important for my learning as a DJ. It opened my ears and eyes about what DJing could be, especially learning from the rave scene and nightlife there.
