Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#99 Stephen Grossberg - Father of AI, a.k.a. Newton and Einstein of the Mind.
Q: What are some of the biggest breakthroughs that you hope to see in neuroscience?
I'm personally more interested in methods that can really measure patterns of neurophysiological activity that correlate strongly with observable behavior to link brain to mind.
#99 Stephen Grossberg - Father of AI, a.k.a. Newton and Einstein of the Mind.
Q: What are some of the current issues in the scientific enterprise?
The federal government of the United States seems to be intent on destroying American science, which is one reason why America has traditionally been a leader in technological progress.
#99 Stephen Grossberg - Father of AI, a.k.a. Newton and Einstein of the Mind.
Q: Have you encountered Michael Levin's work in his Embodied Minds theories?
Yes, but I don't regularly study Michael's work because it's often about embryogenesis, although I've also contributed to understanding some processes during embryogenesis.
#99 Stephen Grossberg - Father of AI, a.k.a. Newton and Einstein of the Mind.
Q: How would these resonance models scale down to explain something like a collective intelligence or a non-neural system like a cell or a bacteria?
In 1978, I published a foundational article about human memory, which included ART among other models. I argued that all cellular organisms, not just rain, not just in mammals, share properties that cause phylogeny.
#99 Stephen Grossberg - Father of AI, a.k.a. Newton and Einstein of the Mind.
Q: What age did you start exploring consciousness and how did you get so enamored in this field?
I started many years ago, before you were born, in 1957, when I was a 17-year-old college freshman at Dartmouth College, taking introductory psychology.
