  • Great podcast for learning about public health

I was tasked with listening to an episode for my Foundations in Global Health class at UC Berkeley. I didn’t really know what to expect, but the episodes were really engaging and have a lot of excellent guests from leaders in the public health field. It’s nicely produced and the YouTube episodes are also nice. Not sure why this podcast doesn’t have more reviews/views across platforms, but I’ll continue to listen to it!

Redefining Global Health in the 21st Century, Chapter 2: A New Epistemology for Global Health — Embracing Complexity and the "Both/And" Approach
Q: Mike, you listed a number of priorities in the chapter on epistemology. What are the new ideas you're considering, and how might they feed into today's conversation?
Mike suggests expanding priorities beyond biomedical and epidemiological targets to include reflectivity about who sets the priorities, how impact is measured, and ensuring partner governments' own epidemiological and equity considerations are reflected in funding and evaluation.
Undetectable, Then Detectable: Decoding the HIV “Viral Blip”
Q: You mentioned the concept of 'pre-bunking' or prepping patients. How do you actually structure that conversation before results come in?
Start with the biology of HIV reservoirs, explain that ART suppresses replication but doesn't eradicate the virus, and set expectations that occasional, low-level blips can occur without indicating treatment failure; emphasize adherence and the need for follow-up testing to confirm.
AIDS 2060 Ep 02 - African-Led Research for an African Epidemic
Q: What role do you see male circumcision continuing to have in this environment?
The role should expand beyond traditional frameworks, with credible African studies supporting its benefits, while also engaging private sector and policy changes to ensure broader access and potential insurance coverage.
Redefining Global Health in the 21st Century: A New Series on Why Global Health Is at a Crossroads
Q: What are the key paradigm shifts you propose for global health?
Shifts in financing, governance that centers populations, and a reimagined science and technology deployment that truly reaches underserved settings, all framed around addressing climate change and its health implications.
Redefining Global Health in the 21st Century: A New Series on Why Global Health Is at a Crossroads
Q: Why did you write this book and who do you want to reach?
We wanted to address what the future of global health could look like and invite a broader audience beyond the public health elite to engage with these ideas.
