Hosted by photographer, author, and former comedian David duChemin, A Beautiful Anarchy is a deeply human, honest, and insightful mostly-weekly kick in the pants for anyone who longs to create anything with soul and too often finds themselves mud-wrestling with the muse to do so. A Beautiful Anarchy is a candid ongoing exploration of what it means to be an everyday creator, whether you're a writer... more

Sometimes the thing we're building, whether that's an exciting new project or a whole career, feels so big and overwhelming it seems impossible. Focusing on that bigger thing, we wonder if we'll ever get traction on our efforts to build it. So what d... more
Isn't art-making and creativity meant to be fun? Why is it so often a source of struggle than anything a sane person would call fun? And are the challenges worth it? Or is there something bigger at play here, something more than fun? I have this feel... more
Introversion seems to have become a movement lately and as someone with strong life-long introverted characteristics, I think it's great that we're finally celebrating those quieter qualities, but there's also a danger in allowing the label to define... more
You're different. About the only thing that we all share in common is that we are so very different. So why do we learn so early to blend in and put so much effort into being the same? Carl Jung talks about the society rewarding the diminuation of pe... more
19th-century economist Vilfredo Pareto was out in his garden when he noticed only 20% of his pea plants were producing 80% of the peas. Fast forward to today and the Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 Rule is familiar to many in the business w... more
We need time to do our best work, but not only time. We need the internal resources to pay the emotional costs, and time without attention, focus, and curiosity probably only leads to cranking out the work, and that neither honours to muse nor benefi... more
A recent visit to the dentist sent me into a tailspin when I was told I needed a root canal. After a week of fear (more like terror) and two hours with a specialist (the worst of which was having to listen to Adele, on a loop), I emerged with a fresh... more
The creative life is full of decisions. Do we? Don't we? And how? Some people over-think their choices, some go with their gut. I go with a simple paradigm that brings things into perspective and focus: if something isn't a "hell, yes!" then it's usu... more
I read David’s books for creative inspiration, and so I was happy to find this podcast. It exceeds my expectations. I tend to listen to an episode or two en route to a photo session. Each is a thoughtful perspective on a given topic about the creative life.
Just found this podcast and this is just what I needed. I am starting the episodes from the beginning and it truly resonates with me. Thank you for giving voice to what most of us say to ourselves in our heads.
He speaks right to the heart and talks about extremely relatable issues and realities…just found this show and super glad I did!
Back to the beginning to listen to all episodes. Ep 43 on Calvin & Hobbes happens to be my favourite so far 😄😄😄
I recently found these podcasts and somedays I feel like the poster child for them lol They are a quick listen that gives you pondering soul food without being overwhelming and a delightful touch of humour. I am working my way through them as I warp my own evolving life as an artist and I am so grateful to have David’s encouragement in the back of my head. Highly recommend!
Unfortunately, there have been no new episodes for some time. But there is a real treasure to be found in the archive! I didn't miss a single episode back then and have since listened to them a second time. David presents deep thoughts succinctly. Knowledge that definitely takes you further. Personal development and photography: absolutely worth listening to. Thank you, David!
This podcast is responsible for pulling me out of every creative slump I’ve been in for the past couple of years. I HATE when other people think they have the answers, generally, so it seems special. David’s clever analogies and ability to express ACCURATELY the every day trials of being a creator is astonishing and comforting. It’s incredible how 15 minutes of “just keep going” can make all the different. DC, if you’re out there, your voice means a lot to me and I miss having new episodes but I... more
Wisdom for artists in 15 minutes. Always helpful.
I have listened to the first 9 episodes of this podcast and I am completely hooked. Very useful and spot on opinions on time management, creativity and focus among others. I like photography for sure, that is how I came here, but the ideas outlined are useful to all aspects of my life for sure. Thanks David for putting this out
Every episode of A Beautiful Anarchy is compelling, motivating and validating. I learn so much and am inspired every time.
I came across this podcast after reading David’s book ‘Starting Ugly’ and I can’t get enough of it.
Every episode resonates with me, as it touches on every thought, fear and struggle I have.
As someone who’s in the same industry David has a great insight and knowledge of what being a creative is like and this is what makes him so relatable.
David addresses all these issues in a thought provoking manner and gives you the ideas and motivation to move forward.
I also like the fact that they... more
A comforting and inspiring listen. No quick easy answers to life’s big questions but rather a collection of helpful, well written and presented thoughts that encourage and support deep thinking about the “real stuff”. Thank you David for making the effort and doing the hard and time consuming work needed to share your gifts via this podcast.
Thank you for being willing to be vulnerable and tell us about how being “different” cost you certain privileges, recognition, acceptance, etc. While you don’t reference it as such, we’re now in a time where differences of opinion are not tolerated. Willingness to think outside the box that’s been pushed at us without consent is a no-no. Once again the experiences of being shunned, laughed at, and ridiculed come to the fore. While you connected this to our art, I believe it applies to all parts ... more
This has become my favourite podcast to listen to. There’s so much here that connects with who I am and who I aspire to be. I always feel lifted up a bit higher after listening to an episode. So grateful to have stumbled upon this!
Years ago, I was delighted to find a book review for “A Beautiful Anarchy,” the book, in a photography magazine. That was when I was first introduced to David duChemin. I love the book, and have read it several times. When he started the podcast, a few years ago, I was thrilled to have a 3x a month thought provoking nugget of philosophy on the creative life. On the 4th week, he sends “On the Make,” to my email. I look forward to these every weekend. It is always relatable, always current, and al... more
