  • Critical Listening

The show has improved substantially since around the time that Mr. Hernandez-Roy had appeared. Topics are relevant and the show is now critical listening. Canada is now covered, which I appreciate in this space. There are now far fewer esoteric topics or book reviews. Please don’t change the direction; you’ve finally nailed it. Credit where credit is due.

  • Utterly Directionless

Update: The episode on semi conductors was literally nothing but sponsored content from Intel. I understand fundraising, but asking the listener to sit through a 20 minute commercial that never even discusses the region is just stealing the listeners’ time. Try Americas 360 from the Wilson Center, if you’re interested in the region. Earlier: This show would benefit enormously from a cohost, a news from around the region segment like the Radio Southeast Asia formula, the Babel discussion after th... more

  • Hard to Invest In

This show would benefit enormously from a news from around the region segment like the Radio Southeast Asia formula, the Babel formula, or some other idea that would serve as a unifying theme. The show is academic, but unfortunately it’s just too dry. I especially feel like the show is disconnected from the listener in that it seems to pick up occasionally without contributing to an over all picture of the region that the listener can follow and become invested in. This problem is exacerbated by... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Beyond Left and Right: Colombia’s 2026 Presidential Election
Q: Can you start by giving us an overview of the main candidates or political figures shaping the race so far?
There are two broad readings: a left-wing bloc seeking to preserve Petro's agenda and a right-wing opposition pushing for institutional change; the electorate appears divided roughly around 47-48%, with a polarized environment and a few clear frontrunners though the field remains wide.
Unpacking Peru's First-Round Elections
Q: Mitra, can you begin by sketching a scene setter for our audience? Why has the presidency been so unstable in Peru this past decade, and how has that colored the electorate's view of politics?
The instability traces back to 2016 when impeachment motions and a growing parliamentary role pushed the presidency into fragile cycles; since then, frequent leadership changes, fragmented parties, and procedural tensions have kept voters skeptical about governance, while corruption and policy disagreements have amplified partisan divides.
Human Rights in Nicaragua
Q: What should regional organizations do in the case of Nicaragua, and specifically what could the OAS do now?
Regional bodies should address the security implications of Nicaragua's export of repression, reinforce the Inter-American Human Rights System, and explore more active roles in future General Assemblies to pressure for democratic norms and the restoration of civic space.
Human Rights in Nicaragua
Q: Speaking of trials, what avenues for justice exist given Nicaragua's non-membership in the ICC?
International law can still exercise pressure via trans-border crimes and regional action, with pathways through universal jurisdiction, state referrals to the ICC, and national courts pursuing prosecuted individuals, all while recognizing the need for multi-jurisdictional coordination.
Human Rights in Nicaragua
Q: Is it fair to use the moniker that Nicaragua is the North Korea of South America?
The comparison highlights the convergence of centralized power across security, judiciary, and administrative functions, with leaders Ortega and Murillo tightly controlling state institutions and erasing checks and balances, though without the nuclear regime aspect.
