  • Critical Listening

The show has improved substantially since around the time that Mr. Hernandez-Roy had appeared. Topics are relevant and the show is now critical listening. Canada is now covered, which I appreciate in this space. There are now far fewer esoteric topics or book reviews. Please don’t change the direction; you’ve finally nailed it. Credit where credit is due.

  • Utterly Directionless

Update: The episode on semi conductors was literally nothing but sponsored content from Intel. I understand fundraising, but asking the listener to sit through a 20 minute commercial that never even discusses the region is just stealing the listeners’ time. Try Americas 360 from the Wilson Center, if you’re interested in the region. Earlier: This show would benefit enormously from a cohost, a news from around the region segment like the Radio Southeast Asia formula, the Babel discussion after th... more

  • Hard to Invest In

This show would benefit enormously from a news from around the region segment like the Radio Southeast Asia formula, the Babel formula, or some other idea that would serve as a unifying theme. The show is academic, but unfortunately it’s just too dry. I especially feel like the show is disconnected from the listener in that it seems to pick up occasionally without contributing to an over all picture of the region that the listener can follow and become invested in. This problem is exacerbated by... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Best of 35 West: LAC Fighters in Ukraine
Q: How do Latin American governments view foreign recruitment and what legal/regulatory approaches can they take to manage it?
The guests describe regulatory and redirection strategies, including clear enlistment rules, prohibitions where effective, and public government statements to guide citizens away from foreign combat duties, while recognizing that blanket bans often backfire and push recruitment underground.
Best of 35 West: LAC Fighters in Ukraine
Q: What factors drive Colombian participation and why are Colombians prominent among foreign fighters in Ukraine?
Andrei and Elizabeth discuss Colombia's large veteran pool, history with private military companies, US training influence, and Colombia's status as a NATO partner. These factors produce a pipeline of experienced personnel who are highly sought after in Ukraine and other conflicts.
Best of 35 West: LAC Fighters in Ukraine
Q: Why has Russia turned to Cubans to recruit for the Ukraine conflict, and what are the dynamics behind this recruitment?
Elizabeth explains that Russia uses a mix of incentives and supply-side pressures, including the allure of wages and opportunities, while also leveraging regional veterans' networks and the existing private military ecosystem to field foreign fighters; the discussion also touches on how Cuba's crackdown and potential redirection mechanisms shape the recruitment landscape.
The Future of the Alberta Separatist Movement
Q: Do you think this federal-provincial agreement can realistically help ease tensions and reduce the separatist sentiment?
While the agreement may help reduce tensions, it also frustrates separatist leaders, indicating persistent unresolved issues. A significant portion of the population may still harbor separatist sentiments despite the agreement.
The Future of the Alberta Separatist Movement
Q: Why has a second Trudeau reinvigorated separatist sentiment in Alberta?
The deep-seated resentment over the National Energy Program imposed by Pierre Trudeau's government continues to resonate with Albertans, and Justin Trudeau's leadership evokes similar fears regarding energy exports and climate policies.
