Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why I left millions on the table | Carl Thompson with Josh Comrie
Q: What does wealth creation mean for founders beyond the exit, and how should they plan for the future?
Wealth creation is not just about the bank balance; it's about sustainable routines, diversified investing (like KiwiSaver), prudent budgeting, and building a framework that preserves capital and supports long-term freedom after exits.
Why I left millions on the table | Carl Thompson with Josh Comrie
Q: When did you realize you were onto something with TradeGecko and what were the early pivots that mattered most?
The breakthrough came after discovering that NetSuite pricing on mobile was prohibitive and pivoting to a Shopify-like ERP approach; early pivots included market testing in Singapore, discovery with shop owners, and eventually securing pre-seed capital after a successful Demo Day.
Why I left millions on the table | Carl Thompson with Josh Comrie
Q: So famously, you've talked about this quite openly, you have ADHD, which we're going to dig into. How does that intersect with entrepreneurship in your experience?
ADHD can fuel multi-tasking and rapid idea generation, which helps in the early hustle and pivot moments, but it also requires conscious management of dopamine, focus, and routines to avoid burnout; with discipline, it becomes a channel for creativity and resilience.
I gave away half of my business on a handshake. Here's why. | Mark Zeman with Josh Comrie
Q: Why did you choose to bootstrap and avoid external funding for so long?
The primary driver was a desire for control and to run the business on a set of personal values, which also enabled a highly deliberate profit-sharing model for the team.
Justin Hamilton: I built it, then bought it back
Q: How did you come to found Devante inside Spark and what was the initial selling point?
We saw a clear opportunity to build a differentiated consulting business with a strong people focus inside a larger corporate, using Spark as a launch pad while maintaining independence and local autonomy to serve the New Zealand market.
