  • Some good stories in here, but you can't just record the audio from a YouTube session and call it a podcast. Reasonably frequently the guest goes "I'm going to play some combat footage", and that's as helpful as a chocolate teapot. He also asks a lot of questions that could be answered by just looking on Wikipedia, rather than asking questions about the guest's experiences which only they could answer, which feels like a waste of airtime (eg he asks an Admiral how a nuclear reactor works)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Australia Turned the F/A-18A Hornet into a Killer [CLIP]
Q: How did the OFP edits flow with the Navy, and were the changes truly beyond cosmetic displays or did they enable capabilities not available on other Hornets?
The edits were shared back with the Navy and involved substantive capability changes, not just cosmetic improvements, allowing home-grown improvements and better integration of diverse gear across partners.
How Australia Turned the F/A-18A Hornet into a Killer [CLIP]
Q: Can you give us some examples of that source code access and how Australian engineers used it to tailor the aircraft?
They describe a workshop environment where civilian contractors could add an Aussie patch to the OFP, patching in country-specific equipment and tweaks, enabling rapid field updates and closer integration with local systems and suppliers.
How Australia Turned the F/A-18A Hornet into a Killer [CLIP]
Q: Can we discuss a little, then, when, before we did, we hit record in the first episode, we were talking and you told me about coming back from Iraqi freedom and having a conversation with somebody in the Australian government about the aeroplane.
The guest explains how after returning from Iraqi Freedom, they discussed aircraft challenges with Australian officials and reviewed a personal record of problems and potential upgrades, which later influenced technical conversations and the defense minister's briefing.
How to Dogfight the F/A-18 Hornet | RAAF Fighter Combat Instructor Explains
Q: How did the upgrade program change the Hornet's performance for you as an instructor?
The upgrade brought more stability and a more reliable flight control envelope, reducing the chances of abrupt departures and allowing us to push the jet closer to its limits with a clearer margin for safety.
How to Dogfight the F/A-18 Hornet | RAAF Fighter Combat Instructor Explains
Q: What makes BFM particularly challenging in the Hornet, and is it more about pre-visualizing space or reflexes?
It's a mix of both; you need pre-visualization, game plan, and overwhelming timing. The aircraft's fly-by-wire system helps, but you still have to manage the 3D positioning, constantly adjust with GPS-like feedback, and stay ahead of the attacker through precise control inputs.
