  • Some good stories in here, but you can't just record the audio from a YouTube session and call it a podcast. Reasonably frequently the guest goes "I'm going to play some combat footage", and that's as helpful as a chocolate teapot.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cold War Phantom: Nuclear Alert, Weapons School & Soviet Intercepts
Q: What was the role of retasking during certification, and how could it affect your plan?
Retasking allowed changing the designated target at the last minute, requiring you to rapidly adjust your briefings and mission plan and still maintain the same level of readiness for potential real-world execution; it was a built-in stress test to ensure flexibility under pressure.
Cold War Phantom: Nuclear Alert, Weapons School & Soviet Intercepts
Q: Can you walk us through what a typical Victor Alert certification looked like?
The process started with weapons qualification, then a week off flying to study, followed by a structured sequence of briefings, mission material review, and a live questioning session with the Wing Radar Strike and other agencies, ending in a one-hour certification before senior leadership where both crews had to demonstrate they could execute the mission.”
"You're in TAC, Now!" Flying the F-4 Phantom after Vietnam
Q: Matthew asks why the J79 smoked so badly, whether it was fuel quality or inherent construction, and how it affected real-world tactics.
The J79 smoked because of its initial design and maintenance practices; pilots could trim engines to run hotter to reduce smoke, and a later airframe modification (TCTO) for the F-4G eliminated most of the smoke trail by the late 80s, with conditions during some fuels causing intermittent issues.
Could You Land an F-35B? Test Pilot Says Yes
Q: Sedlo asks about auto eject capability in the RAF F-35B, whether there are modes for land or sea and if the pilot can disable it.
The auto-eject concept was developed to ensure survivability in cases like lift-fan failure; it is treated as always-on to guard against catastrophic failures, with historical context and ongoing discussion about control modes.
Inside the Secret Barn: Restoring Britain’s First Mach 2 Jet
Q: What is the end goal? Are you going to try and run it? And are you looking for sponsorship? How are you financing and funding the venture?
The goal is to restore the aircraft to its original state by October 28, 1958. We are looking for sponsorship, and funds from a newly published book are going towards the restoration.
