  • Some good stories in here, but you can't just record the audio from a YouTube session and call it a podcast. Reasonably frequently the guest goes "I'm going to play some combat footage", and that's as helpful as a chocolate teapot.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"We flew into Hell": the A-10 in Desert Storm | Pappy Brogli [CLIP]
Q: How did mission planning evolve from air-to-air to air-to-ground as ground troops entered the fight?
Initial plans anticipated softening targets with air support, but as the army engaged, we shifted to suppressing enemy defenses and moving into a more aggressive, flexible role, adapting tactics as the threat environment changed.
"We flew into Hell": the A-10 in Desert Storm | Pappy Brogli [CLIP]
Q: Can you describe the process for positive identification of a target before you drop on it, especially given the risks of blue-on-blue incidents?
We relied on a combination of visual identification, coordinating with the FACs, and strict flight rules, but the landscape was chaotic; sometimes you had to rely on limited cues and the mission demanded quick decisions, understanding that misidentification could be catastrophic.
Will AI Replace Fighter Pilots? | F-35 Test Leader Explains
Q: Can you define AI and autonomy from a military aerospace perspective?
Autonomy here is deterministic code that follows fixed rules, while AI refers to machine learning that learns from data and can adapt, with AI-enabled autonomy allowing systems to operate with learned behavior under human oversight.
Cold War Phantom: Nuclear Alert, Weapons School & Soviet Intercepts
Q: What was the role of retasking during certification, and how could it affect your plan?
Retasking allowed changing the designated target at the last minute, requiring you to rapidly adjust your briefings and mission plan and still maintain the same level of readiness for potential real-world execution; it was a built-in stress test to ensure flexibility under pressure.
Cold War Phantom: Nuclear Alert, Weapons School & Soviet Intercepts
Q: Can you walk us through what a typical Victor Alert certification looked like?
The process started with weapons qualification, then a week off flying to study, followed by a structured sequence of briefings, mission material review, and a live questioning session with the Wing Radar Strike and other agencies, ending in a one-hour certification before senior leadership where both crews had to demonstrate they could execute the mission.”
