1873年、明治政府が発布した徴兵令。
この制度に対し、人々は激しく反発した。“若者の生き血を抜き取る制度”というデマまで広がり、西日本各地では血税一揆が発生。
徴兵から逃れるため、人々は偽装養子、戸籍の移動、醤油の一気飲み、自傷行為などで命がけの徴兵逃れに手を染めた。
岡山県北部で起きた「美作騒擾」では、徴兵への恐怖と解放令への反発、根深い差別意識が結びつき、被差別部落への凄惨な襲撃へと発展。

舞台は、鉄道が通る前の木曾路。山あいの古い宿を訪れた旅人は、そこで語られる奇妙な出来事に耳を傾けることになる。
静かな旅情のなかに、じわりと不穏さが広がっていく怪奇ミステリー。岡本綺堂らしい、端正でどこか薄気味の悪い一篇。

栃木旅・後編の舞台は、那須町の「殺生石」。
この石には、鳥羽上皇を惑わせた絶世の美女・玉藻前、その正体である九尾の狐の怨念が宿り、近づく鳥や獣を殺したという伝説が残されている。
