「昔の日本人は、時計もなく時間におおらかだった」と思ったら、一部当たっていて、一部まったく違っていた。1300年前には水時計を管理する専門官が存在し、江戸時代には季節によって「一刻」の長さそのものが伸び縮みしていた。漏刻、丑三つ、明け六つ、和時計、時の鐘、そして落語『時そば』まで。現代とはまるで違う「日本人の時間」を辿る前編。
