この石には、鳥羽上皇を惑わせた絶世の美女・玉藻前、その正体である九尾の狐の怨念が宿り、近づく鳥や獣を殺したという伝説が残されている。

激しい風と波のなか、約80メートル先の船上に掲げられた扇を、若き武者・那須与一が一矢で射抜いた。
しかし、鎌倉幕府の歴史書『吾妻鏡』には、与一も扇の的も登場しない。生没年は諸説あり、墓とされる場所も栃木・香川・京都・兵庫など全国各地に存在。
