亚里士多德回流西欧，其广度、深度均大大震撼了西欧；然而此人主张竟然和早期基督教台柱奥古斯丁差距巨大。这个背景之下，中世纪神学之王托马斯·阿奎那站了出来，调和了他两大偶像亚里士多德和奥古斯丁的主张：启示/信仰和理性不互斥，理性可以为上帝服务，所以我们要好好运用理性；上帝也没有抛弃此岸的世界，不但没有抛弃，他老人家反而会成全我们此岸的世界，所以我们要好好研究政治和社会……
北宋年间，西欧黑暗的中世纪，竟然就已经出现了大学，并且大学诞生后居然就是学术自由的。原来这是教俗之争双方博弈拼命希望拉拢新兴的大学、对大学示好的结果。大学和古希腊古罗马的学校有什么区别？大学产生的背景是什么？大学最早教的是什么？世俗王权支持之下的博洛尼亚大学和教会支持的巴黎大学各有什么区别？当时的大学和今天大学一样“生活混乱”吗？
