自然神论从凝练概括基督教精神开始，最终通过强调理性在宗教中的地位，成为基督教的又一次重大转向：上帝作为最高明的创造者，必然可以做到创世后便不再插手世界；耶稣的意义也逐渐变成了胸怀大爱的道德楷模。这样一来，世界不再充满奇迹，而是严格遵循上帝颁布的规律运行；研究自然规律就是认识上帝，而不是妄图颠覆圣经的理论；自然神论也用理性的权威取代了圣经的权威，扫清了近代自然科学发展遗留自中世纪的最后一块障碍……
中世纪经院哲学的学问又没用又没法验证，比如争论天堂的玫瑰花有没有刺、针尖上能站几个天使之类的问题。培根说：知识需要有用而且可以验证；而无论是实用性还是可验证性，都来自于一个东西：“人的经验”--具体地说，是人的感觉器官可以把握的那些信号。培根说：既然知识就是收集经验后进行理性分析，那么当代人和古代人，当代人才是更有经验的，古代人才是那个孩子。培根还第一次利用他的归纳法，第一次不靠圣经、不靠亚里士多德，纯粹通过观察研究，归纳出来了一个新的知识。
根据黑格尔的说法，古希腊哲学专注于客观世界，中世纪基督教哲学关注人类主观，二者结合，诞生了近代的哲学。近代哲学从怀疑中诞生，目标是为了追求可靠的、普遍的、可迭代的知识。西欧思想家以怀疑为精神、经验为依据，分别出现了不列颠经验主义和大陆理性学派，最终在德意志古典哲学中得到了统一。
