自由城市中商人发展的极限便是美第奇家族，美第奇家族几代奋斗，把佛罗伦萨、文艺复兴带到巅峰。最终因为城市体量不够，商人获得的舞台强度不够，自由城市繁殖并推翻封建社会的模式宣告失败。自由城市虽然带来了改变的火苗，但直接推倒封建社会失败，最终靠的是商人群体不断壮大，并要克服“买房置地”的传统封建地主观念，进入王国的议会，表达自己的政治诉求，形成自己的政治流浪，最终才蜕变成现代的资产阶级……
