美國著名作家馬克吐溫 Mark Twain，被喻為美國文學之父，並有「幽默大師」的美譽，過去有不少的名人或作家包括尼采、達爾文、魯迅、大江健三郎、甘迺迪總統等等都是他的讀者。他的短篇小說集《他是否尚在人間：馬克吐溫幽默故事集》收集了不少他的名篇，包括成名作《卡拉維拉斯縣的名跳蛙》、《他是否尚在人間》、《火車上的人吃人》和《我怎樣編農業報》等。 他擅長諷刺社會時弊，以至對人性有各種的批評，大多尖銳而精準到位，讓讀者大笑之餘也不乏反思的空間。
意大利符號學家Umberto Eco 安伯托.艾可，於1980年發表的處女作The Name of Rose 《玫瑰的名字》，全球總銷量已超過三千萬冊。但艾可這位符號學大師最著名的作品《玫瑰的名字》並不容易閱讀，中譯版全書約五百多頁，另外附有一百多頁的註釋，全因小說裏用上很多符號學和中世紀歷史的知識。有人形容《玫瑰的名字》為福爾摩斯式的修道院謀殺案的偵探小說，艾可希望透過這部作品，讓讀者思考閱讀文學的方法。你準備好向難度挑戰嗎？
哥倫比亞作家馬奎斯，1982年獲頒發諾貝爾文學獎。他被喻為眾多作家的作家，因為許多作家也是他的讀者，但馬奎斯更難得的是，獲得諾獎後仍然創作不斷，而且不乏評價很高的佳作。 於1967年發表的《百年孤寂》是馬奎斯最具代表性的作品，它以魔幻寫實的方式，將邦迪亞家族六代人歷經的百年奇幻故事，反照南美大陸，甚或是人類的歷史。《百年孤寂》令我們思考歷史的吊詭和其真正意義！
