  • Out Of The Main

Tom and John Nixon, both excellent musicians, songwriters and producers, brings a Yacht Rock slant to their loving dissection of music and especially the Music from the Mid 70’s to Mid 80’s - the so called “Yacht Rock Era”, but also takes a slightly Geeky turn into analysing the Musicianship, Production and mixing techniques of the Era, But “detours” into other Genres and Artists happen frequently and it is always accompanied by a funny and friendly banter with a “Pirate-y” vibe that only 2 bro... more

  • My regular go-to yacht rock pod!

Love the balance of technical and non technical content. Every time I listen I start feeling like I’m one step closer to learning the secret to identifying a songs yachty attributes only to have the seeds of doubt once more planted in my pea brain until the next episode! But I’m a sucker for punishment. So keep hitting me with those lush Lukather riffs and Porcaro shuffles. I’m here for it!

Q: Tell us about your influences beyond, obviously you mentioned Eddie Van Halen, but who else?
For funk guitar, the gold standard for me is Paul Jackson Jr.
S6.E7: Modern Smooth, with Super db
Q: Is there a specific target that you're going after this time for your new album?
We don't want it to sound modern; we aim for it to resemble a 70s or 80s record instead.

Q: How does the personnel roughly shake out between you and your brother?
Myself and JP generally sing our own songs, with Matt contributing vocals on earlier albums. After his passing, it’s primarily just the two of us now.
S6.E7: Modern Smooth, with Super db
Q: As you formed the band, tell us a little bit about how you got started, and why did you pick the direction that you did?
We originally had a brief similar to Daft Punk but ended up creating something that was born of love for playing together.

Q: What influence did you grow up with relative to what we know as Yacht Rock?
Russ speaks about his attraction to production work and mentions learning about influential producers.
