普罗米修斯遵照宙斯的命令，创造了动物和人。可普罗米修斯造的动物实在太多，而人却少得可怜。宙斯觉得人为万物之灵，在数量上也不能太少，因此又命令普罗米修斯毁掉一些动物，多创造一些人。普罗米修斯执行了宙斯的命令，毁去了一些动物的外形，把它们更换成人的模样。因此，有些人仅仅具有人的外形，其内心仍与动物一样。
