完成《家鎖：華人家庭這個巨獸》這本近二十萬字的作品後，譚蕙芸一直面對很多讀者的疑問與驚嘆。作為常採訪社會運動的記者，她的對外人設似乎是「公共、陽剛、往外衝」的，「但我就特意把自己關在山洞裡寫這本書，寫完之前完全沒有告訴外人」。出版以後果然很多人表達意外，譚蕙芸也對這些意外感到意外。

「我意識到自己的身份可能影響受訪者的回應。作為一名中國籍、講俄語的研究者，受訪者或許會假設我傾向某種立場，並調整自己的發言。如果我是來自西方大媒體的記者，受訪者的回答可能會有所不同。
另外我覺得自己作為中國大陸人，我有時會發現，比起對烏克蘭人，無論是我還是同溫層的許多朋友，我們往往對流亡的俄羅斯人更容易產生共鳴，而台灣、香港的朋友，或許就更容易共情烏克蘭。」
