  • Great podcast but the first five minutes are all advertising

I want to appreciate that hosting a podcast comes with expenses, but I just spent five minutes listening to advertising before getting to any content at which point I no longer really wanted to listen to the podcast. I suppose I don’t understand doing a podcast this way? Why not spread the advertising out throughout. Or maybe it’s done on purpose so that we can fast forward to the first five minutes, but as someone who’s relatively new to the podcast I honestly didn’t get past the first five min... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Friday Morning Coffee: Seth Gordon
Q: How did you get people to open up and share so generously?
By drawing on a wide network of colleagues, being transparent about the book's aims, and showing genuine curiosity about diverse perspectives, which helped secure commitments from a broad and representative group of theater professionals.
Friday Morning Coffee: Seth Gordon
Q: How did you choose who to interview for the book, and what was your process to get people to open up?
He leveraged long tenure in the field, reputation, and relationships to name-drop early contributors, building trust that encouraged interviewees to share candid experiences about boards, leadership, and the realities of nonprofit theater across varied scales.
Friday Morning Coffee: Seth Gordon
Q: So now we put that question to you. What led to your career in the theater?
Gordon describes growing up in New York with artist parents, studying at the High School of Performing Arts and Carnegie Mellon, pursuing directing, and gradually moving into leadership roles in nonprofit theaters, which shaped his views on the field and led to his current work.
Episode 749: Keith O'Brien
Q: Why focus on the underdog angle and the broader human story rather than just Bird's talent?
Because the real drama and impact come from the people around Bird—the underdogs who formed a supportive network and the small-town dynamics that nurtured him; this is where the heart of the narrative lies, showing how a community fueled a legend and how leadership from people like Bill Hodges mattered as much as Bird's raw skill.
Episode 749: Keith O'Brien
Q: What was your research and interview process like for this book?
I spent weeks in Indiana—French Lick, Terre Haute, and other small towns—interviewing dozens of people, including teammates and the head coach, and I relied on diaries, local library archives, and old television footage to build a nuanced portrait beyond what Bird himself could tell, recognizing that memory is fungible and multiple perspectives yield a fuller truth.
