Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

U.S. moves to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by force. Will it reignite wider conflict?
Q: First of all, what do you see as the main triggers behind the US decision to launch a military operation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz?
The guest attributes the decision to US impatience and a miscalculation that military pressure will bring Iran to negotiation, warning that Iran may instead respond with resistance and escalating actions, leading to a fragile path to any negotiated exit.
China blocks Manus acquisition: What signal does this send?
Q: Why does offshore registration not change the underlying status of Manus CoreTech in China?
Even if registered offshore, core R&D, personnel, data, and history connected to China keep regulators' authority intact, as the transaction could still affect China's security interests.
China blocks Manus acquisition: What signal does this send?
Q: What exactly was blocked in this case and why is it significant?
The NDRC blocked Manus's foreign acquisition, viewing it as a national security issue due to the potential transfer of China-developed AI capabilities, data, and engineering talent to a foreign entity, which could undermine China's strategic interests.
UAE to exit OPEC, more than an oil story
Q: So first of all, when you saw this news, given all the instability in the Middle East and rising global energy prices, were you surprised? And what do you think is really behind this UAE's decision to step away from OPEC?
The move reflects a mix of strategic calculation and immediate revenue considerations; the UAE wants more flexibility and capacity to respond to price signals, and it signals dissatisfaction with the existing quota framework while seeking greater independence in its energy policy.
How is Mark Carney preparing for US-Canada trade talks?
Q: So what do you make of the possible thorny issues in the forthcoming review of the current North American Free Trade Agreement?
A mix of political recalibration and fundamental economic frictions; the U.S. seeks to reset alliances and reduce perceived Canadian advantages, while issues like lumber, energy, and indigenous production complicate the path to an agreement.
