  • Great Info and Perspectives

I’ve been listening to these folks about a year off and on. They’ve got great honest advice for new and long time woodworkers. There’s the perspective of the professional cabinet maker and realities of hobbyists with experience. They’re not pushing products and just talking shop. Worth the listen.

  • A pretty good pawkast

I like this show for its minimalist production and diverse, practical advice. I have one big peeve, and it has nothing to do with woodworking. Guy always calls it a pawcast…for some reason he never pronounces the ‘d’ when he says “podcast”. Given that this peeves me, and he says “pawcast” at least six times every episode, I am tempted to rate it at four stars.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mouse Poop?, Dark wood Marking, Veneer Glue and MORE!!!
Q: What steps would you take to disinfect wood with mouse droppings without damaging the wood?
Avoid bleach; instead use isopropyl or denatured alcohol to wipe the surface, then let it dry. If necessary, mill the surface later to ensure any contamination is removed.
Design Software, First Veneer Projects, Extinct Tools and MORE!!!
Q: What's your experience with veneers, glues, and clamping when veneering panels, and what advice would you give to someone starting veneer work?
Multiple viewpoints converge on using stiffer or non-PVA glues for veneer (such as urea resin or polyurethane), the importance of substrate flatness, the risks of veneering warped stock, and practical clamping strategies using cauls and sandwich clamping to avoid distortion while achieving even pressure.
Design Software, First Veneer Projects, Extinct Tools and MORE!!!
Q: How much detail do you go into when modeling or designing your own pieces in software like Fusion 360, and what are the reasons for that level of detail?
Opinions vary: one host leans toward minimal detail for efficiency, another appreciates modeling thorugh to ensure critical dimensions (doors, drawers, joints) and uses 3D models to visualize overall proportions, but still leaves room for on-bench adjustments and practical constraints.
Design Software, First Veneer Projects, Extinct Tools and MORE!!!
Q: What is a tool that is no longer made or is no longer in style that you either can't imagine working without or wish you had acquired when it was readily available?
The group shares nostalgia for items like older belt sanders, a Porter-Cable 7518 router, and a manual lathe, while acknowledging some items have become expensive or obsolete; they also discuss how certain classic tools were central to older workflows and how modern substitutes try to fill those gaps, though the appeal often remains with the original hardware.
Which Drum Sander?, Drawer Slides, Door Repair and MORE!!!
Q: What is a drawer too wide, specifically front-mount slides?
Drawers wider than 36 inches require stabilization bars to prevent racking, and for heavy use, heavier slide options (like 135-pound-rated Blum components) can handle the load, with the tradeoff being space and price.
