Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Lights Out Ohio with Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative Program Coordinator Matt Shumar
Q: How do I get started birding? What do I need?
You really don't need much to start birding. Get binoculars if you can, a field guide to identify species, and simply walk out into your yard or local park to begin learning; spring is ideal because warblers and other migrants are passing through and can appear almost anywhere.
Steelhead with Fisheries Management Supervisor Curt Wagner
Q: If I am a novice fisher and I'm interested in Steelhead, what is the best way to be set up for success?
Start simple: basic gear and a willingness to learn from local anglers' forums, with a focus on season and water conditions. In the fall, near shore break walls, a spinning rig with a float and jig or spoons works well; in colder winter months, smaller presentations and bottom-oriented baits are more effective, and for open-water Lake Erie fishing, depth and timing near the thermocline matter.
Born Wild, Stay Wild with Ohio Division of Wildlife's Permit Coordinator, Stormy Gibson
Q: What is the role of wildlife rehabilitators?
Rehabilitators assess, treat, and prepare animals for release back into the wild, working with licensed veterinarians, and they also educate the public about wildlife.
Born Wild, Stay Wild with Ohio Division of Wildlife's Permit Coordinator, Stormy Gibson
Q: Born Wild, Stay Wild—what is that about?
It's about keeping the wild in wildlife, especially in spring when babies are born, and teaching people to leave wildlife alone unless there's a real need to intervene, so the animals stay healthy and in the wild.
Morel Mushroom Madness with Wildlife Officer Brad Buening
Q: What tools do you recommend for a successful and safe mushroom hunt?
Brad recommends mesh bags, a mushroom knife with a brush, a compass or GPS for navigation, a walking stick to help reach through briars, bug spray, water, snacks, and basic first-aid gear; a thermometer for soil temp is also useful.
