Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Of Mud and Blood: Cinematographer Jean-Gabriel Leynaud
Q: What are the biggest logistical and safety challenges when filming in Congo, and how did you navigate them?
Safety depended on building trust with local guides, armed groups, and UN contacts; we lived among the villagers, used Congolese scientists and ethnologists, and constantly balanced risk with the need to tell accurate stories, including handling arrests and potential attacks.
Of Mud and Blood: Cinematographer Jean-Gabriel Leynaud
Q: What drew you to this project and how did you approach the subject matter on film?
I wanted to show the everyday lives and struggles of people on the other side of globalization, not just the sensational story; through immersive filming with locals and researchers, I aimed to let audiences feel the reality of those communities and understand the factors behind child labor and poverty.
Post "Ceasefire" Gaza with Dr. Nahreen Ahmed
Q: What is it like in Gaza now post ceasefire?
Despite a proclaimed ceasefire, conditions in Gaza have deteriorated, with severe shortages of medical supplies and rising waterborne diseases. The morale of healthcare workers is low as they face continuing challenges and significant trauma.
Dr. Thaer Ahmad on Gaza and Walking Out of a Meeting with Biden
Q: Can you walk me through your experience walking out of the meeting with President Biden?
I felt that the meeting would be a publicity stunt and needed to send a strong message about U.S. policy in Gaza, so I walked out.
Dr. Thaer Ahmad on Gaza and Walking Out of a Meeting with Biden
Q: What stood out to you most during your humanitarian work in Gaza?
The unique and horrific aspect of being locked into an area without a safe zone as civilians faced heavy weaponry.
