  • Enjoy this podcast but…

Giving the podcast a solid 4 stars because I appreciate the discussion. Only reason it’s not 5 stars is because I always listen to the podcast with my finger on the +30 sec button (especially for the first 10-15 minutes) because there is way too much chatter. Would be better if podcast was 20 minutes and more to the point.

  • Educational and Uplifting

Ryan has a way of taking complex marketing topics and breaking them down in a practical and consumable way. Listening in, you feel like a friend having a chat. I appreciate his positive outlook and theme throughout all of the segments. Crop Marketing can often drag a person down, but I don’t feel this listening in. I look forward to each episode! Keep it up, Ryan.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Canola Price You See Isn’t the Price You Get
Q: John, how are you feeling about this market given the big moves yesterday and the rebound today?
Prices look like a gift for New Crop at these levels, but the market remains fragile and unpredictable, so a combination of hedging with futures and using options to establish a floor provides a balanced approach to risk.
Crop Marketing | Tough Calls Ahead
Q: What crop out there is the 'silver bullet' for price stability or profitability in 2026?
Suzanne suggests flax and canola have potential under certain market conditions, with flax showing some demand and cyclical patterns, and canola remaining a significant driver though influenced by China dynamics; the overall guidance is to look for crops with consistent demand and favorable margins while planning for rotation flexibility.
Crop Marketing | Tough Calls Ahead
Q: 2026, less wheat, more wheat, or the same for next year?
The host predicts slightly lower wheat acres and emphasizes evaluating profitability; if the 2026 December futures offer a better margin (e.g., higher price relative to costs), farmers might adjust acres accordingly, but the core advice is to focus on margin goals and be strategic rather than blindly increasing wheat acres.
SHOULD FARMERS BUY FERTILIZER NOW? Josh Linville Says the Market Just Changed
Q: How far out is there liquidity in CME fertilizer contracts, and what's a practical horizon?
Liquidity exists in the near term (July-September) with some activity extending to three months, which is a reasonable planning window for hedging decisions.
SHOULD FARMERS BUY FERTILIZER NOW? Josh Linville Says the Market Just Changed
Q: Should farmers spread out their fertilizer purchases or try to buy all at once?
Spreading purchases can help manage price risk and leverage price declines, but individual cash flow and storage constraints will drive the decision; there are tools (e.g., CME contracts) to manage risk.
