二战以后，美苏进入了冷战模式。东西方开始了冷战对抗。大家都大力发展核武器，以求确保互相摧毁的能力。那年头导弹啥的还都不可靠，射程也不够远。因此呢，大家的核武器都是用轰炸机带着突破对方的防空网，对对方进行核打击。要是苏联发动进攻了，然后这些轰炸机再起飞，那很可能就不赶趟了。说不定苏联轰炸机已经飞到了头顶了。因此，轰炸机必须时时刻刻都在空中飞行。大家轮班，你上去，我下来。保持着有载有核弹的轰炸机在天上转悠。苏联在欧洲啊，西欧的小伙伴们是前沿阵地啊。那么，没办法要时不时到小伙伴家门附近去转转。

到了1959年，他们计划向马里亚纳海沟进发，哪里是世界上最深的地方。英国一艘叫挑战者的船测量出这里有着近11000米的深度。因此马里亚纳海沟的最深处，也叫“挑战者”海渊。海军作战部长阿利伯克亲自批准他们开启这项计划，冲击挑战者海渊的深度。但是作战部长也告诉他们，在搞定之前就不要瞎得瑟了，千万不能嚷嚷的满世界都知道。看来阿利伯克还留了个心眼儿。
