Join Andy and James as they finish an unfinishable board game and whine about it.

SPI’s The Campaign For North Africa is a comically complicated board game that feels like a practical joke. It was published in 1978, and to this day it remains unfinished. For some reason (perhaps masochism), Andy and James will be playing the 1,500 hour board game to completion - no matter the toll on their minds

  • Subtle, Humble, Brave

One might not think that a podcast about two guys playing an insanely complicated board game that entails almost more bookkeeping than actual play would be very entertaining. But listening to James and Andy journey through the deserts of their minds as they come to grips with the Herculean task they’ve set for themselves feels quite a bit like, well, hanging out with a couple of mates. Excited to listen for the next decade as this project trudges on! A great listen for wargamers and non-wargamer... more

As listeners we could really do with outsiders perspectives (Saranne and Jay) they would go into depths about the weather etc…

  • Fun podcast

The first 17 episodes I would give 2 stars but the rest is great, if you want to start listening skip to episode 18 unless you want to hear them moaning about how horrible the game is, planning a new world order and advertising some weird drink. They actually start the game in like episode 18

  • Followed for the board game, stayed for the rapport.

It is clear that Andy and James have been friends for a long time which helps to create an entertaining atmosphere. Learning the game history, the war it was based on, and how each session of theirs has gone would not be half as interesting, or even be worth immortalizing without the wit and banter each friend brings to the “game table.”

Q: How are victory points calculated?
Victory points are calculated based on the areas controlled, specifically settlements.

I would probably start with a defensive strategy.
Episode 46: Ships In The Night
Q: How do you reinforce a division?
Reinforcements can be attached to a division by using capability points, historical designations allow for easy reinforcement of specific units, and replacement points can be used for units that lose capabilities.
Episode 44: Icarus
Q: If it seems to be out of reach, can you just surrender?
In theory, they could surrender but intend to finish the game regardless of the outcome.
Episode 40: Ragebait
Q: Have you come up with a better name for your fans than Perverts yet?
We haven't. We actually didn't want Pervert to be something that catches on at all. So I don't know. Maders? Maders?

Frequently Asked Questions About War With A Mate

What is War With A Mate about and what kind of topics does it cover?

Two longtime friends tackle SPI's Campaign For North Africa, a famously sprawling and unfinished board game, with a mix of sharp banter, strategic discussion, and occasional forays into history and culture. Episodes balance parsing complex game mechanics and historical context with humorous riffs, personal anecdotes, and live-show updates, creating a distinctive blend of nerdy analysis and lighthearted camaraderie. The format often features listener prompts, ambitious gameplay goals, and a willingness to tackle heavy topics (war, accountability, and propaganda) in an approachable, irreverent style that still respects the historical material. A notable hook is the hosts' commitment to finishing a 1,500-hour game, which lends a sense of ongoi... more
