《五四婚姻》是一本讲述了七个新旧交替时期的女性的故事。她们是朱安、许广平、江冬秀、曹珮声、张幼仪、陆小曼和林徽因。
这些女性都在生前与某位男性知识名人有过婚姻或浪漫关系。以往的主流叙事中，当人们谈论起这些女性，看到更多的是“他们的XX”，甚少谈及她们作为自己生命主体的体验。
而这本考究入微的著作，试图从另一个视角观察“婚姻”这一话语和现象对女性人生的影响。这本书讲述鲜活又复杂的女性故事，当中女性面对的诸多问题，在今日依旧有回响。

在长达八年的时间里，“小妾”秦氏反复纠缠敲诈着丈夫徐以仁一家，三次罗织罪名，将徐告上公堂。这是她的A面人生。
乾隆末年，秦氏因“犯奸之妇”的身份被官媒卖给在四川打拼的外地人徐以仁为妾。在八年中，她至少被卖了两次，至多被卖了五次。这是秦氏的B面人生。
