  • The best resource for Italy trip planning

I listened to dozens of episodes of the podcast in the months leading up to my Italian honeymoon last year, and I keep coming back for more. Katy’s guidance is indispensable for first-time Italy travelers and veterans alike. I learn something new on each episode and the list of Italian cities and regions I want to visit keeps growing. • It’s a shame pushing the business has taken away from the content

I used to love this podcast but it has become so focused on pushing their travel agenda planning company that it’s frustrating to listen to!

  • Used to Be So Good!

This used to be my favorite travel podcast and community - full of generously shared tips and hidden gems. Now it’s just a cringey sales pitch with surface level tips you can find on your own. The older episodes are still a treasure trove for planning travel to Italy, but don’t bother with the new ones.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

330. A Perfect Day in Palermo - Sicily's vibrant capital
Q: How would you spend a day in Palermo as a local and a tourist?
Silvia describes starting at Porta Felice to catch the solstice light, sharing pastry and coffee in the morning, walking through the neighborhoods, exploring open-air markets like Ballarò, visiting the botanical garden and Spasimo, then ending with a lively evening of music and dancing in Piazza Bellini.
329. Learning Italian - Easier Than You Think? [From the Vault]
Q: Is Italian a difficult language to learn for travelers and adults?
The guest argues that Italian is not inherently difficult for English speakers; with a clear goal, consistent practice, and the right guidance, most learners can reach functional conversation, particularly if they combine grammar basics with practical immersion.
327. Your Italy Travel Questions: Choosing a base in Tuscany and for the Cinque Terre, hailing taxis and more
Q: Dan asked about where to base for visiting the Northern Lakes and whether to drive or take trains.
Plan two to three bases rather than a single hub; use Milan as a potential base if needed, but recognize that ferries and driving around Lake Garda, Como, and Maggiore are practical, with ferries essential for lake village access and car usage offering flexibility when visiting multiple lakes.
327. Your Italy Travel Questions: Choosing a base in Tuscany and for the Cinque Terre, hailing taxis and more
Q: Catherine asked how to hail taxis and how to avoid being overcharged.
Taxis in Italy are usually found at ranks or booked via phone/email; ensure the meter is on and be aware of fixed airport fares; use taxi apps like IT taxi or Free Now to know prices upfront, and consider having the hotel call a taxi for you to guarantee a meter-based ride.
327. Your Italy Travel Questions: Choosing a base in Tuscany and for the Cinque Terre, hailing taxis and more
Q: Peter asked about which electrical plug types are used in Italy and whether travelers should bring adapters.
The episode explains that Italy uses three plug types (C, F, and L); type C works broadly, type L is common in older Italian buildings, and type F is the Schuko plug. A universal adapter is recommended, with a type C adapter for most modern devices and a type L backup for older sockets.
