Episode 6: Silja Häusermann on the Crisis of Social Democratic Parties

Episode 6: Silja Häusermann on the Crisis of Social Democratic Parties
Q: Could you say again, like, how do you examine why people change their party of preference over a long time?
We employ diverse methodologies, including panel data that allows tracking individual attitudes over time, and we synthesize findings from several country studies to understand party switches and electoral potentials.
Episode 6: Silja Häusermann on the Crisis of Social Democratic Parties
Q: So, as you mentioned, the crisis of social democratic parties relates to their voter base; how have these structural changes translated into electoral coalition changes?
Social democratic parties have increasingly attracted voters from the educated middle class while losing ground among the traditional working class, which has created a diversified electorate that still retains some support for redistributive policies.
Episode 6: Silja Häusermann on the Crisis of Social Democratic Parties
Q: Can you explain a little bit what are we actually talking about there? What are key developments you think since the 1980s that's now also changed the fate of social democratic parties?
The main driver of this decline is structural change in the economy and labor markets, particularly the decline of the industrial sector and the expansion of the service economy, which has altered party bases and working class demographics.
