  • Extremely helpful!

My girl has been dancing for four years so while we’re not newbies this podcast has been extremely informative and entertaining. So glad I found it and will let the rest of the moms in our class know about it! Wish I had found you sooner!

  • Love this podcast!

I’m a rec dancer but I like listening to this podcast to see what competition dance is like! I’m also a frequent traveler, and the comp prep episodes usually apply to my vacation prep! I would 100% recommend this podcast- Amira & Cayse’s episodes are short and engaging! However I would really like to see the dancers on the podcast more, and maybe more frequent updates!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Choreography & How it Affects Scores: With Jennifer Olsen of Pulse Dance Studio
Q: What about using outside choreographers versus in-house ones?
Outside choreographers bring energy and new perspectives but can create fairness concerns if not everyone has access; a healthy mix with backbone teachers ensures consistent quality and growth across the studio.
Choreography & How it Affects Scores: With Jennifer Olsen of Pulse Dance Studio
Q: Can a dancer with strong technique score as well as a dancer with strong presentation?
Yes, because scoring depends on how well the dancer's skills are integrated with the piece's style and storytelling, and sometimes a performer with a natural abundance of presence can outshine more technically complex routines.
Choreography & How it Affects Scores: With Jennifer Olsen of Pulse Dance Studio
Q: How important is choreography to the scoring of a solo versus a group piece?
Choreography sets the tone, but execution and presentation are what ultimately influence scoring; a solo benefits from tailored, individual fit and storytelling, while group pieces gain from cohesive interpretation and how the pieces use the stage.
Derek Piquette: Recruiting Tips for College Dance Teams
Q: What advice do you have for dancers and parents navigating recruitment for college teams?
Focus on balancing studio training with high school experience, understand the ladder of opportunities, and emphasize personality, presentation, and ability to collaborate in a team while pursuing education and athletic commitments.
Derek Piquette: Recruiting Tips for College Dance Teams
Q: What does the Solo Showcase look like and how does it help dancers get recruited?
The Solo Showcase is a 90-second solo performance limited to 50 per city, scored but not a competition, designed to ensure recruiters see a dancer in a focused solo moment, separate from group routines.
