  • Great find!

Entertaining podcast, would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in applying to Tuck’s business school or interested in energy in general. There’s a lot of podcasts about energy generally, but getting the leadership lessons mixed in makes it a great listen for anyone starting in the energy space

S.5. E.3. Grid United’s Michael Skelly on Challenges Facing Transmission Development in America Today
Q: Given your experience, how do you approach the space where you innovate in right-of-way and land acquisition for large transmission projects?
We've adopted a method used in oil pipelines: secure rights to land upfront and then begin permitting. This helps show the project is real to regulators and landowners alike, and it's complemented by engaging across landowners early to secure buy-in, including royalty structures when appropriate and pooling land for efficiency.
S.5. E.3. Grid United’s Michael Skelly on Challenges Facing Transmission Development in America Today
Q: So, what kind of background led you to become a leader in project development and later in grid-scale transmission?
I started with entrepreneurial ventures, worked in Central America on a Costa Rica project, and fell in love with project development—covering engineering, financing, permitting, and land aspects. This blend drew me into energy projects in the mid-90s, and I moved into wind, then transmission, culminating in the formation of Grid United to connect grids across the country.
S.5. E.2. Equinix's Adrian Anderson on Hyperscale Energy Strategy and the Future of Data Center Power
Q: In negotiations with energy providers and policymakers, what are the kind of conversations that go on in these rooms, and what are the critical contending elements?
He notes that conversations depend on whether you're dealing with a regulated utility or an IPP, emphasizes the mundane reality of contract negotiations, and stresses balancing value, risk, and timelines while maintaining transparency and collaboration across parties.
S.5. E.2. Equinix's Adrian Anderson on Hyperscale Energy Strategy and the Future of Data Center Power
Q: So I have two questions. How did that shape your career moves? And how has that function evolved from where it was a decade ago to what it looks like today at a company like Equinix?
Adrian discusses starting in energy with a renewables developer, moving into major tech companies, and scaling energy teams from a handful to dozens or hundreds of professionals. He explains the shift from energy being a nice-to-have to a critical function deeply integrated with procurement, infrastructure, and regulatory strategy, and highlights the growing importance of professionalization, analytics, and cross-functional collaboration.
S.5. E.1. Thad Hill, Former CEO of Calpine on Baseload Power, Energy Policy, and Career Advice
Q: What advice would you give a student interested in energy today?
Energy is a vibrant, capital-intensive field with a strong policy overlay; be open to multiple roles (finance, development, rotations) and consider geographic flexibility, as hubs like Houston drive much of the activity.
