「要不是因為吐司來英國留學，我其實從沒想過自己有天會在國外生活。」這是Irene來英國後，很常說的一句話。
撇除掉諸多生活習性上的落差，還有東西不好吃的問題，讓Irene如此有感而發的隔閡也是許多台灣人的罩門——外語能力。台灣人普遍對自己的英文能力缺乏自信，這有很大一部分得歸咎於大家在求學時期面對分數的挫折。如此負面的自我認知，反而會讓我們在遇到需要使用英文的場合時，因為畏縮而發揮不出應有的實力，真的很可惜。

近十年來英國有相當大的變化，政局動盪連帶影響治安。尤其是最近幾年感受更加明顯，身為「外人」的利與弊在敏感時刻被放大，也看到越來越多仇恨犯罪（hate crime）的新聞，甚至就發生在我們身邊。身為台灣人，我們很熟悉家鄉的人情味與安心感，因此更加不習慣走在街上要繃緊精神、即便大白天也要隨時防範路人的焦慮。

我跟Irene都是台灣豬的忠實愛好者，而豬肉，也是在英國生活最濃重的鄉愁來源。雖然之前因為口蹄疫，使得台灣豬沒辦法出口、難以讓外國人品嚐，但我們兩人都認為台灣豬品質之高，完全能與所謂世界三大名豬並肩。本想著台灣拔針後，或許有機會可以在英國吃到台灣豬肉製品（朝思暮想的香腸，還有滷肉軟罐頭！），但因為台中浣熊市，那個夢想又變得好遙遠。
