Makor Rishonבשלהי אוגוסט התכנס בבאזל הקונגרס הציוני הראשון בהובלת בנימין זאב הרצל. שם, על אדמת שוויץ, הוקמה ההסתדרות הציונית העולמית, ובכך חתמה על תעודת הלידה הרשמית של המפעל הציוני. מטרתה הראשית של הציונות הוגדרה כמעט מיד: חידוש הריבונות היהודית בארץ ישראל, כלומר – הקמת מדינה יהודית. לאחר שזו הוקמה, התעדכנה מטרה זו לכדי – תמיכה בישראל, הבטחת קיומה וחיזוקה.
