3,000 miles of ocean separate Ireland from the USA, but both countries share a deep and intertwined history. Links between North America and Ireland predate Columbus, stretching back over 1,000 years. Since then, Irish people have shaped the history of the United States. From Ann 'Goody' Glover, who was hanged as a witch in Boston in the 17th century, to JFK, the story of the Irish in the US is fa... more

Great show.
I appreciate being recognized as part of a diaspora. Those of us in America who descended from Irish (Connacht and Munster here), didnt choose to live in America. Our families moved for a number of reasons, but many of us retain elements of the culture and love Ireland. I’ve spent time all over Ireland and visited my family’s village. Our history in Ireland includes all of history until the 1860s. How are we less Irish than someone who has lived there for a fee generations?

I love the Transatlantic podcast! Thank you for your informative and thoughtful analysis of a subject which should have been tackled a long time ago. Kudos for taking a challenging history on and doing it right.
I just love the way Fin and Damian make me feel as if I’m sitting at a table having a chat with them about the Irish American experience. I’ve always been hesitant to lean into my Irish origins because I don’t feel like I have the right to claim Irish ancestry since it’s now been three generations and my family has lost virtually all connection to Irish culture. It’s part of me though and Fin and Damian have allowed me to learn, honor and even investigate my own families transatlantic journey wh... more
I have listened to every Irish History Podcast by Fin Dwyer. While his podcast is carefully produced in an historical narrative form, Transatlantic takes a conversational approach with two history experts. It's highly informative and enjoyable. I never miss an episode.

A history-focused show that explores Irish American history through deep-dive episodes and conversational interviews. Listeners can expect thorough context on migration, emigration during the Great Famine, Irish involvement in US events like the Civil War, and how cultural memory has shaped transatlantic identities. The hosts bring a lively, expert-driven dialogue with a steady rhythm of archival detail, individual narratives, and cross-Atlantic comparisons. Noteworthy is the frequent pairing of two historians delivering rigorous analysis in an accessible, storytelling style that often centers on lesser-known angles and myth-busting moments about long-running Irish diaspora topics. This blend makes it a strong pick for listeners who enjoy w... more
