  • All great interviews by Grayson Brulte but...

...the interview with Deepmap's Mark Wheeler stood out to me and is an awesome episode. I was aware of DeepMap, Inc. from a macro-view but Grayson Brulte's conversation with Mark Wheeler not only gives an in-depth picture of the company but Mark's journey from his Apple 2+ and all his experience along the way. Thank you both for a great one!

Keep them coming SAE & Grayson, really enjoying listening and learning!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

334. Turning Streetlights Into EV Chargers
Q: What are the most important factors when deciding where to deploy voltpost systems in a city (residential vs. high-traffic areas, use of GIS data, etc.)?
A practical approach is to target locations with clear demand such as multifamily residences and community hubs, guided by municipal input and data like heat overlays and GIS. Start with easily convertible poles and expand as demand justifies more installations.
334. Turning Streetlights Into EV Chargers
Q: When you're deploying in a municipality, do you have to go to city council for approval to modify the poles or is that done at the utility level?
Approval varies by city; some places have more empowered staff and faster approvals, while others require formal votes or longer processes. The key is engaging early, educating stakeholders, and demonstrating a successful pilot to build trust.
334. Turning Streetlights Into EV Chargers
Q: How do you convert the lamp post for charging? Do you have to tap into an existing conduit? What does that conversion look like? Is it different from the UK to the US?
It hinges on using the existing conduit and the wiring approach varies by country; in the UK many streetlights are directly mains-connected allowing simpler Level 2 charging, while in the US you often have a shared conduit with one cable feeding multiple lights, so the conversion focuses on utilizing the existing conduit and careful wiring so a charger can be attached with minimal disruption.
332. Can Airports Become Innovation Labs?
Q: How does CVG decide which technologies to pilot and scale, given the need to balance agility with the realities of large hub vs. mid-size operations?
CVG uses a staged approach (good, better, best) focusing on scalable pilots, prioritizes solutions that can operate across different hub sizes, and partners with startups to test fit before broader deployment, ensuring alignment with airline, regulator, and regional needs.
332. Can Airports Become Innovation Labs?
Q: What was the impact of reporting TSA wait times on passenger experience and airline relationships?
Publicly sharing wait times helped reduce anxiety for travelers, set expectations, improved perceived service quality, and created a feedback loop with TSA and airlines to optimize operations across the checkpoint.
