  • Maybe my favorite podcast

Lee’s neo-theological approach to all matters impacting our lives and our planets is unparalleled. But please get rid of the unabridged versions of the program. They are abridged for good reason.

This last episode on AI is more lit than the sun. It’s super helpful to hear Lee do what he does so well- mix experts with his own insight. I’ve always believed that the smartest people aren’t the ones who know the most, but can synthesize information and share it with others more clearly than most are capable. Lee’s economy of words here is the proof. Bravo. Excited for part two.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

260: Nicholas Ma: What to Do With the People You Love But Don’t Agree With
Q: What was the motivation behind Leap of Faith and the choice to follow pastors over a year?
To explore whether people with deep differences can belong to each other and remain in relationship, revealing humanity and the possibility of durable friendship across disagreements.
258: Unabridged Interview: Shankar Vedantam
Q: How do religious and spiritual ideas intersect with scientific findings about human flourishing, and what can be learned from that intersection?
Religious traditions often advocate universal kindness and caring for others, which science now shows benefits mental and physical health. There isn't a necessary conflict between faith and science; together they illuminate paths to well-being, while acknowledging that religion can also be misused to justify oppression.
258: Unabridged Interview: Shankar Vedantam
Q: What recurring patterns have you found in how people change over time, and how should we think about future selves when making plans?
People change more than they expect, often significantly across decades, yet they assume they'll stay the same. Recognizing that future selves will differ helps cultivate humility, curiosity, and less harsh self-judgment when plans don't unfold as imagined.
258: Unabridged Interview: Shankar Vedantam
Q: So my first question is, if you were to use your own approach on your life story, how did you get from there to here and what have you learned that was hidden before?
Life is unpredictable, and plans should be made with humility because the mind's hidden patterns often steer us in directions we don't anticipate. The shift from engineering to journalism happened gradually as I found writing, conversation, and asking questions to be transformative, revealing hidden aspects of people that wouldn't come out otherwise.
256: Unabridged Interview: Josh Brake
Q: What safeguards or practices would you recommend to engineers building AI?
Develop and reinforce habits of mind that integrate deep human questions with technical rigor; design tools as instruments with guardrails; foster community conversations around the societal impact; and pursue regulatory-incentive models that align innovations with the common good.
