興化存獎禪師為禪宗第三十九代宗師（臨濟宗第二代），師承臨濟義玄禪師，也繼承了臨濟宗教化嚴峻的棒喝宗風。
與興化存獎禪師相關的公案流傳下來的不多，但其中一段與五代十國時期後唐莊宗相關的記載寓意極深，值得提供後世修行人參酌、深思。
