The Leverhulme Series #4. Ethics in the Past Lives of the Buddha ft. Naomi Appleton
Q: Do you think that in some ways is maybe promoting a worship culture where you might pick an idol that you think is a particularly holy person and worship them?
Yes, worship practices often center around the Buddha due to the role he plays in helping others, and Jataka stories support this veneration process.
The Leverhulme Series #4. Ethics in the Past Lives of the Buddha ft. Naomi Appleton
Q: Could you give us an example of one such story and maybe discuss the effects of using animals to discuss moral scenarios?
One of my favorites is a comic story about a dung beetle who, while drunk, challenges an elephant, leading to his demise. This illustrates how animal fables can present moral lessons while inviting audiences to engage with the broader implications of intoxication and morality.
The Leverhulme Series #4. Ethics in the Past Lives of the Buddha ft. Naomi Appleton
Q: Over time, who told Jatakas and who were they told to?
Jataka stories were likely told at special holy days and festivals, used in sermons, but also aimed at monastic audiences, varying from audience to audience.
The Leverhulme Series #4. Ethics in the Past Lives of the Buddha ft. Naomi Appleton
Q: Naomi, could you begin by telling us a little bit about the work that you do, and maybe in doing so introduce what Jataka's really are?
I'm a scholar primarily of ancient Indian narrative materials, particularly fascinated by Jataka stories, which are stories of the past lives of the Buddha that capture episodes from his quest for enlightenment.
Ep. 56 The Women are Up to Something ft. Benjamin Lipscomb
Q: Have you noticed differences in how men and women do philosophy?
Lipscomb relates to the integrated approach of some women philosophers and suggests that there are different methods and that all aspects of philosophy are valuable.
