  • Community of Learners

I love all the Microbe TV shows, but especially appreciate how listeners get to participate in this one. The recently adopted biweekly format, with “deep dives” into scholarly work alternating with the classic case studies works well.

Four regular hosts are generous in every sense and reveal their personalities in enjoyable banter.

When discussing administration of CIS43LS they forgot to check the math. One dose for me at 40mg per kilogram would be 3.38 grams. That would require an IV infusion.

TWiP 264: Toxoplasma changes your brain
Q: Is there any way to eliminate the cysts in the brain?
We don't routinely try to clear the dormant state; we're usually jumping in when a person develops active disease.
TWiP 264: Toxoplasma changes your brain
Q: When you get a toxo infection, do the brain cysts remain for the rest of your life?
They remain for the rest of your life, and they're not completely dormant.
TWiP 260: Daily rhythms
Q: So, you know, these mosquitoes prefer to bite at night, right? So, malaria is quite successful. That implies that a lot of people are up at night and they get bitten, right?
This suggests that the timing of mosquito biting and human behavior is interconnected, and that control tools must be adapted accordingly.
TWiP 253: Sub-Saharan somnolence
Q: What was the diagnosis of the 28-year-old patient who had returned from Tanzania?
The patient was diagnosed with African sleeping sickness caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense following a recent trip to game parks and a presentation of somnolence and malaise.
TWiP 248: Toxoplasma reduces Alzheimer's disease
Q: What are the potential implications of T. gondii infection on amyloid and Alzheimer's pathology?
There is emerging evidence from studies indicating that T. gondii infection may reduce amyloid density in the brains of Alzheimer's disease models, suggesting a protective effect.
