  • Good Content but Awful Presentation

I appreciate what the hosts do as we need more people talking about the CFL. But the product is just dreadful. The hosts are ridiculously monotone; it sounds like more of a sleep story podcast than a football one. And the introduction and transition music is downright weird. Questionable guitar rifts and awkward deep voice announcements. The content is good, just work on your presentation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Quick Kicks with Steve Daniel (CFL Associate VP, Football and Team Analytics).
Q: Can you tell me how your analytics shaped on-field decision making, especially on third down and in the red zone?
Analytics have pushed teams to move beyond traditional yardage and toward scenarios like end-zone depth, red-zone win rates, and down-and-distance splits, which coach decision-makers now routinely consider when choosing to punt, go for it, or kick.
Pep in their step.
Q: What are your thoughts on the cross-border partnership between CFL teams and NFL franchises as discussed in this episode?
The hosts see potential benefits in increased visibility and fan engagement, while acknowledging concerns from purists about diluting the CFL brand; they emphasize the importance of clear partnerships and keeping league integrity intact.
Hungry and determined.
Q: What were the key factors affecting the Elks' playoff chances in the late season stretch?
Both the on-field results and the complex tiebreaker rules were critical, with the Elks needing wins and favorable outcomes in other games to advance, while also facing debates about game leadership and urgency in clutch moments.
Quick Kicks 150: Steve Daniel (CFL Associate VP, Football and Team Analytics).
Q: How do you approach gathering the data to inform these changes?
He describes breaking down every play, creating five-yard blocks for field-goal attempts, and building a comprehensive model to project outcomes under new field dimensions, while maintaining skepticism and validating with real data.
Quick Kicks 150: Steve Daniel (CFL Associate VP, Football and Team Analytics).
Q: When did this whole analytics-led process start?
Steve explains it began early in the season with assembling the core football minds, then bringing in data specialists, and gradually relying on data to guide decisions, with ongoing collaboration and communication across the league.
