Thip Khao Talk is an honest, somber, and straightforward conversation about the American Secret War conducted in Laos in the 1960s and 70s. I never knew about the unexploded ordnances (UXOs) that the US dropped in Laos, and it quite shocked me to learn about how casual the Lao people were about these bombs. These UXOs could explode at anytime, but because of misinformation, the bombs were not handled with adequate caution. Most importantly, hearing about the effects of UXOs in Laos reminds me ab... more
Loved listening to this podcast! As an American, I never knew about UXO and the Secret War in Laos before stumbling upon these podcasts. It has been super interesting to get to hear about Laos and immigrant experiences through Lao voices. Aleena does a great job in making sure that the conversation is genuine with the guest speaker and it feels like a chat b/w friends rather than an interview! Overall, I’m glad that I found this podcast as it allowed me to be a fly on the wall and learn about th... more
The history which this podcast seeks to elucidate is profoundly uncomfortable, both for Americans and Lao people alike. It’s a history that has not just been forgotten, but has been actively obscured by institutions which would much rather not confront the its implications. more
This podcast has been life-changing. Every story featured so far has helped amplify stories and secrets that have been kept from the public for too long. This is a modern and intimate way to retell the history of U.S. intervention in Southeast Asia and provide a lens that is often missing from the narratives in history books taught to American students. This podcast serves as a reminder that secrets do not have to stay secrets forever and there's a beauty behind storytelling told from first pers... more
Appreciate the voices and stories that LoW continues to put out in the world, esp the latest Matriarchs episode!
I am so glad to be able to listen to a podcast that’s Lao-American related. As a Lao person living in America, it is so hard to find representation in the media. Our stories are always hidden and our history is basically nonexistent in history books. I really look forward to hearing more episodes!
This podcast is a must-listen. It thoughtfully educates about the U.S.’s secret war and legacy of unexploded ordnance in Laos while providing context into the lives and communities this history has impacted. It’s nuanced in the stakeholders it engages with (a Lao mother and daughter, an aid worker, and an author recounting a trip to Laos so far) creating a podcast that is equally heartbreaking as it is inspiring. It intimately engages with a complex and difficult issue in a way that is insightfu... more
Listening to the Matriarchs in May episode hit me hard. My mom came to the U.S. as a refugee and she passed away when I was 19. This is the exact conversation I wish that I could have now that I am older and realize what she went through. It is such a good reminder now that I am a mother - to share my stories with my son. Thank you for this podcast - it is bringing healing and hope.
