  • I listen to a lot of politics podcasts and this one is amazing.

I was not too sure about this podcast before I started listening to Thinking Global, but I am so glad I did. I am a student and have used these episodes to help with my understanding and work. The guests they get on are great, somehow they get the best experts you can get, like the names you read about in my textbooks. I listen to a lot of politics podcasts and this one is a keeper, by far the best international politics podcast for analysis. Love it, keep it going.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

T.V. Paul on International Security - Part One
Q: How do you see India's evolving role in the Asia-Pacific, particularly with US-China competition?
India occupies a swing-powered role in the Indo-Pacific, seeking to balance relations with the US and China while avoiding alignment that would threaten regional security, leveraging its geography and partnerships with Japan, Korea, and ASEAN to maintain strategic autonomy.
T.V. Paul on International Security - Part One
Q: What motivated you to write The Unfinished Quest, and what core argument do you want readers to take away?
The guest explains that India's ascent is powered by a search for higher status and its complex history, arguing that great power status is not automatic and must be actively acquired through strategy, domestic development, and international positioning.
T.V. Paul on International Security - Part One
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself, your journey into international relations, and what drew you to study security and conflict in global politics?
The guest discusses growing up in India, studying in Delhi, moving to UCLA for a PhD, and developing an enduring interest in nuclear weapons, security competition, and South Asia, which led to a long academic career at McGill and a focus on how regional dynamics connect with global security.
Philip Cunliffe on The National Interest
Q: What is the revival of the national interest intended to achieve?
A return to a disciplining concept that anchors political elites to the needs and will of the people, potentially leading to a more peaceful international order and preventing perpetual humanitarian campaigns that circumvent national accountability.
Philip Cunliffe on The National Interest
Q: Why has IR abandoned the national interest, in your view?
The discipline misinterpreted the national interest, treating it as critique rather than a driver of public life, which eroded its explanatory and normative power over time.
