  • Perfect for what we need!

I’m so tired of the news, with their bias, agendas and lack of depth. So when I listened to this, it was a breath of fresh air. He goes REALLY in depth and brings actual experts, Ph.D.’s who specialize on the topic. I’ve already learned so much (check out the China episodes). And with all of tension and anxiety in Gaza, hearing from academics on both sides has been quite insightful (as opposed to drowning in a sea of misinformation on social media).

This last episode about the history of food and dieting was really fun. I don't follow politics that much. I like this podcast because it gives the history of what happened before politics. I've listened to two episodes on environment too (a topic that's very important to me).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Who Controls America’s Patent System?| S6E3
Q: Is there a difference between appealing a final PTAB decision and appealing the director's initial decision to institute or decline review?
Yes. A final PTAB decision can be appealed to the Federal Circuit, but the initial institution/denial decision by the director is generally not appealable, creating a split in when review is possible.
Who Controls America’s Patent System?| S6E3
Q: Could you please explain what inter partes review is and how it differs from federal court proceedings?
IPR shifts the focus from court litigation to an administrative process within the USPTO where private parties challenge patent validity before Administrative Patent Judges, aimed to be cheaper, faster, and more technical, while not addressing infringement or remedies.
Cheap Enough Oil - America’s Oil Culture and the Politics of Freedom | S6E8 HbN
Q: Was the National City Lines conspiracy a primary driver of transit decline, or were there broader factors?
While National City Lines played a role in dismantling urban transit, broader policy choices, housing policies, labor dynamics, and consumer culture also contributed to privatized mobility and oil dependence.
Cheap Enough Oil - America’s Oil Culture and the Politics of Freedom | S6E8 HbN
Q: What role did government policy play in shaping oil consumption after the Depression?
New Deal-era interventions, labor protections, mortgage guarantees, and public works fostered mass consumption and suburbanization, helping stabilize oil demand and enabling a long period of growth.
Cheap Enough Oil - America’s Oil Culture and the Politics of Freedom | S6E8 HbN
Q: How did oil become a driver of urban form in the United States?
Oil enabled dispersed, car-based suburban development by supporting long-distance mobility, private consumption patterns, and a pipeline of infrastructure that encouraged people to live farther from city centers.
