Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP67: AI Therapy and the Risk of Getting it Wrong
Q: What surprised you most about the results, and were there any findings you didn't expect when you started the research?
The most surprising finding was how widespread and harmful the use of these models already is, with many platforms presenting as therapists despite lacking proper evaluation or regulation, and the realization that harm can be systemic due to design choices like sycophancy and lack of real-world grounding.
EP67: AI Therapy and the Risk of Getting it Wrong
Q: So AI is a very broad term. Could you start by clarifying what types of AI systems your study focused on and how that differs from or is similar to ChatGPT?
We focused on large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Cloud, testing them in therapy-like scenarios and comparing with open-source models like Llama variants to see how model size, age, and creator involvement affect safety and suitability for emotional support.
The Stigma of disclosing Mental Health difficulties among Professionals in the Field
Q: What advice would you give to a psychology trainee who is struggling with mental health but fears judgment or professional consequences?
Seek support early, use both professional and peer networks, disclose on your own terms when ready, and recognize that recovery and resilience can develop with appropriate resources and time.
The Stigma of disclosing Mental Health difficulties among Professionals in the Field
Q: Do you think the stigmas can contribute to depression, anxiety, and suicidality among applied psychologists?
Yes, stigma can deter disclosure and help-seeking, increasing risk for worsening mental health, which in turn can affect professional functioning and well-being.
The Stigma of disclosing Mental Health difficulties among Professionals in the Field
Q: What do these findings convey about the stigma around professionals in the field experiencing mental health struggles themselves?
They show that stigma is widespread and that many professionals have both diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health challenges, yet there has been limited attention to studying this group, which reinforces the need for open dialogue and more research.
