Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Amy Morin | Author and Keynote Speaker | "Mental strength is not about acting tough."
Q: How can coaches apply these ideas in practice with athletes?
Coaches should help athletes name and manage emotions, create pre-performance routines, tailor approaches to individual needs, and use open-ended questions to guide behavior and mindset away from forceful, one-size-fits-all pep talks.
Amy Morin | Author and Keynote Speaker | "Mental strength is not about acting tough."
Q: What do you feel like people get most wrong about mental strength?
They equate mental strength with mental toughness and the ability to push through emotions; in real life, suppressing emotions is harmful, and true strength includes naming emotions, seeking help, and aligning behavior with values.
Dan Meske | Head Volleyball Coach, University of Louisville | "Take more from failure than it took from you."
Q: What were the biggest lessons learned in your first year as a head coach?
Key takeaways include prioritizing what truly matters over everything, recognizing the critical importance of staff, and adopting a journaling routine to reflect, learn, and communicate growth to the team.
BONUS Episode: The Coach's Playbook and the Mental Performance Summit
Q: How do you view the balance between winning more and living better?
Both are achievable by aligning personal values and priorities with performance goals and by ensuring sustained attention to the behaviors that actually move the needle.
BONUS Episode: The Coach's Playbook and the Mental Performance Summit
Q: What does your 'Coach's Playbook' aim to teach coaches for their own development?
How to build a personal game plan to protect their own well-being and effectiveness, so they can create a better environment for their players and teams.
