Reviews

4.7 out of 5 stars from 13 ratings
  • Very good content but audio needs work

I turn to this show to get a critical perspective on the awful tech industry. The content is excellent and the guests share a range of valuable expertise. I listen regularly despite the problems with the audio—as another reviewer said, the content is very quiet but the ads are loud and begin at random times with no warning, and can truly hurt your ears. (This makes me feel very irritated by the advertisers and I immediately skip through, which is presumably not the goal.) Please fix this problem... more

  • Too Quiet

Episodes need to be better engineered—main content is too quiet, sometimes very low, requiring turning up the volume to maximum, and then the commercials come in at a normal volume and are way too loud. Painful to listen to, disappointing because the content is good.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can Apple make AI less annoying and maybe even useful? | Will Guyatt
Q: Do you think Apple will be able to use its delayed AI strategy to address the public's declining opinion on AI?
The guest suggests that Apple's deliberate pacing and nine-dimensional chess approach could turn delays into strategic advantages, giving them time to learn from user interactions and craft killer use cases that demonstrate practical value, rather than rushing a flop. The emphasis is on integrating AI in a way that feels natural and secure, leveraging hardware and ecosystem control to build trust and adoption over time.
OpenAI’s IPO is a move of ‘desperation’ | Ed Zitron
Q: What would have to happen for the AI spend to justify the revenue targets you hear being touted?
There would need to be a literally unprecedented, sustained, and transparent monetization of AI across multiple core businesses, with clear ROI per product and per user, which current token budgets and infrastructure spends do not demonstrate.
OpenAI’s IPO is a move of ‘desperation’ | Ed Zitron
Q: Why do you think OpenAI is pushing for a September IPO despite the questionable economics?
Because leadership may feel private funding is drying up and wants to unlock liquidity; it could also be an attempt to stay ahead of a perceived decline in underlying momentum, even as the actual economics remain opaque.
This OpenAI’s ‘doom scenario’ | Eric Newcomer
Q: What role do hyperscalers like Microsoft and Google play in sustaining these AI pioneers financially and strategically?
Hyperscalers provide a large portion of the revenue through investments and revenue backflows to their platforms, enabling these AI firms to raise and scale. The strategic alliance with Microsoft and Google also shapes competitive dynamics, valuations, and the long-term viability of OpenAI and Anthropic as platform plays in cloud and search ecosystems.
This OpenAI’s ‘doom scenario’ | Eric Newcomer
Q: Do IPOs for OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX seem feasible in the near term, and what factors would influence their success?
IPOs are uncertain and hinge on how private valuations evolve, market appetite, and whether investors remain patient enough to back these companies through continued losses. The success would be influenced by how well the companies can demonstrate durable profitability paths, strong revenue mix, and mitigated regulatory or scrutiny concerns.
