  • Very good content but audio needs work

I turn to this show to get a critical perspective on the awful tech industry. The content is excellent and the guests share a range of valuable expertise. I listen regularly despite the problems with the audio—as another reviewer said, the content is very quiet but the ads are loud and begin at random times with no warning, and can truly hurt your ears. (This makes me feel very irritated by the advertisers and I immediately skip through, which is presumably not the goal.) Please fix this problem... more

  • Too Quiet

Episodes need to be better engineered—main content is too quiet, sometimes very low, requiring turning up the volume to maximum, and then the commercials come in at a normal volume and are way too loud. Painful to listen to, disappointing because the content is good.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kimi 3: AI bench marks are just marketing | David Gerard
Q: And let's start with the benchmarks, as that's what we were first given as well. What do you think about Kimi 3's benchmark performance relative to frontier models?
Benchmarks are misleading indicators at best; Kimi 3 may perform on par with frontier models in a controlled test, but that doesn't prove real-world usefulness or cost-effectiveness. The hype around benchmarks often overshadows practical limitations and broader context like reproducibility and data quality.
AI Backlash: ‘This is a self-inflicted public relations apocalypse’ | Gil Duran
Q: What do you see as the root cause of the current public backlash against AI and the fear surrounding its impact on jobs and society?
The guest argues that it's a mix of industry fear-mongering, environmental and social harms, and the real economic disruption from AI—amplified by the visible consequences of data-center operations and layoffs—creating a visceral sense that AI threatens livelihoods and communities.
Are Chatbots Driving Us mad? | Maggie Harrison Dupré
Q: What could realistically be done to address these safety concerns, and could have any impact if mandated or standardized?
A combination of mandatory safety testing, transparent reporting, dynamic safeguards, and external watchdogs seems necessary to curb dangerous user experiences and ensure accountability beyond voluntary measures.
Are Chatbots Driving Us mad? | Maggie Harrison Dupré
Q: How much of this do you think falls at the feet of tech companies for the marketing they've done around these tools?
Marketing often portrays AI as a nearly magical, transformative force, which can obscure its limitations and safety risks; this oversight can contribute to users trusting these tools in dangerous ways and delay implementing necessary safeguards.
The rising cost of AI is reaching tipping point | David Gerard
Q: So the cost efficiency of AI is becoming a bit of an impassable sticking point for industry as enterprise customers start to question if they're getting enough from it to warrant the price?
David Gerard explains that the economics are driven by subsidies from VC funding and that the real, unsubsidized cost of running these models is much higher than advertised. He argues that customers rightly question value when performance improvements lag behind price increases, and that marketing claims about efficiency are often not backed by independent measurements.
