  • Great show, BUT…

I love the show, but the ads are horrendous. They just barge into the middle of sentences, twice as loud. They’ve got to do something about them

I get that ads are the price we pay for a free show. It’s just, can’t we have actual breaks where they pause, cut to an ad, and then start up again once they’ve played?

  • Very good content but audio needs work

I turn to this show to get a critical perspective on the awful tech industry. The content is excellent and the guests share a range of valuable expertise. I listen regularly despite the problems with the audio—as another reviewer said, the content is very quiet but the ads are loud and begin at random times with no warning, and can truly hurt your ears. (This makes me feel very irritated by the advertisers and I immediately skip through, which is presumably not the goal.) Please fix this problem... more

  • Too Quiet

Episodes need to be better engineered—main content is too quiet, sometimes very low, requiring turning up the volume to maximum, and then the commercials come in at a normal volume and are way too loud. Painful to listen to, disappointing because the content is good.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Office workers don’t want to use AI anymore | Paris Marx
Q: Are companies truly seeing ROI from AI deployments, or is it more about signaling in a competitive landscape?
There is a perception that many AI initiatives are financially nonviable or only marginally beneficial, leading to budget cuts and a reevaluation of what generative AI should actually be used for, with large firms pulling back after early overinvestment.
Office workers don’t want to use AI anymore | Paris Marx
Q: How is bot-sitting affecting workers and project timelines in practice?
Workers report added, often unpaid, tasks to verify AI outputs and integrate tools into workflows, which slows progress, raises costs, and contributes to demotivation and job insecurity as bosses expect outcomes that AI cannot consistently deliver without human checks.
AI surveillance is already being abused | Joseph Cox 404 Media
Q: You and your colleagues at 404 Media have been leading on the reporting around FLOC's cameras. There's a lot to get stuck into, but before we do get stuck into it, can you just quickly explain sort of how a FLOC camera differs from a typical surveillance system?
A FLOC camera is mainly an Automatic License Plate Reading system that scans license plates and related vehicle data constantly, creating a time-stamped, geolocated record of movements. There are higher-end variants (Condor) that can capture live footage, and with natural-language-like queries, officials can request footage of people with specific attributes. In short, the core tool is ALPR with some models capable of broader footage, and access controls depend on camera type and jurisdiction.
The AI boom is an illusion built on two companies | Ed Zitron
Q: Is there a path where AI becomes universally useful and infrastructure demand scales to support it, or are we looking at a structure where growth depends on continued large-scale investment and subsidies?
Even if AI becomes universally useful, the economics hinge on enormous, ongoing capital expenditure without clear profitability, implying that the industry must either dramatically grow its customer base or rely on perpetual subsidies from big tech and investors.
The AI boom is an illusion built on two companies | Ed Zitron
Q: So someone asked me earlier this week why the AI boom is actually an AI bubble. Why do you think the demand won't justify the trillions being spent?
The argument is that a large share of AI compute demand is concentrated in a few labs and that the absence of a diversified, paying customer base makes it unsustainable, with hyperscalers subsidizing OpenAI and Anthropic rather than a broad market paying real prices.
