Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Strength Training Kids: What EPs Need to Know - Carol Robins
Q: What conversations should EPs be having more openly?
Focus on prevention over cure, educating clients about long-term health, and creating proactive programs for at-risk populations to reduce future injuries and disease, rather than waiting for problems to arise.
From Physiology to Policy: Dr Rob Newton on Exercise in Cancer Care
Q: How did you first get into this field and what drew you to exercise for people living with cancer?
My path started in human movement studies and lab work, evolving from elite sport support to clinical practice, with a pivotal shift toward exercise as medicine for chronic disease and cancer, sparked by early experiences in cardiometabolic and cancer care and the realization that exercise could meaningfully influence treatment outcomes.
From Research to Referrals in Exercise Oncology - Dr David Mizrahi
Q: Can you take us back to how you got started in this field, and what drew you into specializing with people with cancer?
I got into cancer work almost by chance while finishing my EP degree; a lecturer suggested research, which led me to an ovarian cancer study and realizing how many people are affected and how exercise could help. Early experiences showed me that even with limited evidence, clinicians and researchers were eager to use exercise to improve outcomes, and the potential to influence practice kept me pursuing this path.
Guiding Future EPs: Chiara Mastrogiovanni on Mentorship and Mental Health
Q: What strategies would you recommend for an EP when addressing a patient's psychological aspects without being a mental health professional?
Prioritize listening, tailor approaches to what the client enjoys, and use social connection as a bridge; when needed, refer to a specialist and collaborate with referrers to ensure safety and appropriate care.
Guiding Future EPs: Chiara Mastrogiovanni on Mentorship and Mental Health
Q: What is your PhD focused on and how does it relate to your clinical work?
My PhD examines physical activity for mental health, with a focus on workforce capacity—how exercise professionals and mental health professionals can collaborate to promote activity for mental health, aligning research with practical client care.
