  • Great discussions on Substack

Found this very useful, with some “timeless” discussions on building audience, engagement and moving from free to paid content

Bill Bishop’s Sinocism, Manoj Kewalramani’s Tracking People’s Daily are two China-focused Substacks that got my thinking about launching a Substack newsletter - and Bill’s is mentioned as an excellent example. But the Podcast series really opens discussions on those “unknown unknowns” with the platform and help me consider different approaches

  • Very White Perspective podcast

Kinda sad to see every episode about the white struggle. You have a diverse community please make sure to share their experience as well. Would love to hear about Mexican American Substack podcasters /writers or African American Substack podcasters /writers. Learning how white people struggle can only take a minority so far. Would love to hear about people that look like me and their struggle on Substack writing and podcasting.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Open Tab: Hunter Harris
Q: What changed when you moved from traditional magazines to independent Substack work?
Taking the leap allowed more control over voice and topics, a closer connection to readers, and the freedom to pursue obsessions that fuel both the newsletter and other projects.
Open Tab: Lachlan Cartwright
Q: What spurred your decision to leave American Media and start Breaker?
The NDA, visa leverage, and the realization that the industry needed independent, transparent storytelling pushed me to strike out on my own and build Breaker as a sustainable business with an audacious editorial ethos.
Open Tab: Lachlan Cartwright
Q: What was the Catch and Kill process like, and how did it affect your decisions at the time?
Catch and Kill involved buying a story's rights and then not publishing it, often to protect powerful figures; this created a chilling atmosphere, forced NDA constraints, and ultimately drove me to expose the broader pattern.
Open Tab: Lachlan Cartwright
Q: How did you first get involved with the National Enquirer and what did you discover there?
I started as the executive editor and soon learned they paid for stories to suppress and kill them, a practice deeply at odds with ethical journalism and one that revealed how ownership could steer editorial direction.
Open Tab: Ashlee Vance
Q: When did you first approach Elon Musk about the biography, and how did that initial interaction shape the project?
Around 2012, with an understanding that Musk might be a difficult interview subject; the early meetings laid the groundwork for later access, even as Musk initially refused to participate. The process evolved through persistent outreach and strategic contract negotiations, ultimately securing a monthly interview arrangement.
