  • Wonderful questions great conversation

Kris took the time to think about what was going to be most useful for productivity and performance for her listeners. It was easy to give ideas to listeners to help optimize and excel using a strategy that most of us didn’t know it was right outside our door. The specific dose is and when where and how are as individual as you are. Kris understood that and is a terrific interviewer.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

663: Ex McKinsey and LBS Lecturer, Dr. Rebecca Homkes, on High Growth Strategy (Strategy Skills classics)
Q: What is the most surprising thing for executives when they move into teaching executives about strategy?
The most surprising insight is how little understanding of strategy exists inside organizations, despite frequent discussions about the topic, and how essential it is to simplify strategy to basics before attempting larger changes.
663: Ex McKinsey and LBS Lecturer, Dr. Rebecca Homkes, on High Growth Strategy (Strategy Skills classics)
Q: What does survive, reset, thrive look like in practice for a company facing a crisis?
She describes a three-phase loop where survival emphasizes stabilizing cash flow, costs, customers, communication, and culture; reset focuses on testing beliefs and redefining strategy; and thrive is about implementing changes while continuing to learn and adapt.
663: Ex McKinsey and LBS Lecturer, Dr. Rebecca Homkes, on High Growth Strategy (Strategy Skills classics)
Q: How did your experience across Bain, McKinsey and BCG shape your views on strategy execution?
The guest explains that each firm has strengths and differences by industry and practice, and that success comes from choosing the right fit for your goals and from practical, real-world execution rather than theory alone.
660: Former Co-President and Board Member of WWE, George Barrios, on Systems Thinking, Conviction, and Leadership Under Pressure
Q: What changes in your view of systems thinking as you grew into leadership roles?
Over time I moved from a general curiosity about how things work to actively training the muscle of systems thinking: starting with a top-down mental model, asking how each change affects the whole, and recognizing unseen forces influencing the system. This mindset allowed me to identify leverage points that could improve the entire organization, not just individual functions.
660: Former Co-President and Board Member of WWE, George Barrios, on Systems Thinking, Conviction, and Leadership Under Pressure
Q: George, how would you define systems thinking and explain how you apply it in practice?
Systems thinking is about understanding how all parts of a system—customers, internal processes, external environment—interact, including elements outside our control. You build a mental model of the whole, start with hierarchy of customers, value, production, and delivery, and then iteratively fill in the gaps, recognizing second- and third-order effects to anticipate outcomes.
